A Raxial Flux motor is Koenigsegg’s name for an electric motor design that combines features of axial-flux and radial-flux motor topologies. The term is the company’s coined label, not a category shown in the reviewed material as having a standardized industry definition.
What does “Raxial Flux” mean?
In an electric motor, axial-flux and radial-flux describe the principal direction of magnetic flux across the air gap in relation to the shaft. Koenigsegg says it combined the two approaches in what it calls Raxial Flux. Its Quark product page calls the design an “industry-first mix of the two topologies.” Koenigsegg’s Quark page uses the label for its in-house motor, and the company also applies it to Dark Matter.
Koenigsegg characterizes axial-flux solutions as more torque-dense and less power-dense, and radial-flux solutions as more power-dense and less torque-rich. That is the company’s explanation of its design rationale, not a universal rule that predicts how every motor of either type—or every hybrid—will perform.

The names describe different orientations of magnetic flux in the motor’s air gap. Raxial Flux signals Koenigsegg’s claimed combination of those approaches rather than a wholly separate, broadly standardized motor class. The company’s public pages do not disclose enough internal geometry to reconstruct the Quark or Dark Matter rotor, stator, winding, or magnet arrangement, so the label alone does not provide a detailed engineering blueprint.

Which motors use the Raxial Flux name?
Quark
Koenigsegg’s current Quark product page lists the first production version at 28.5 kg, with up to 600 Nm of torque and 250 kW of power. The company describes it as using 300M steel, direct cooling, and a hollow carbon-fiber rotor. These are manufacturer-published specifications and design descriptions, not independent test results.
An electrive report dated February 1, 2022, updated January 5, 2023, reported a Quark weight of 30 kg alongside the 250 kW and 600 Nm figures. That earlier reported weight differs from the 28.5 kg figure on Koenigsegg’s current page; the figures should not be combined as though they describe the same dated specification.

Dark Matter
Koenigsegg’s Dark Matter product page lists 800 hp, 1,250 Nm, a mass of 39 kg, and a maximum speed of 8,500 rpm. The company describes it as a six-phase, patent-pending Raxial Flux motor. Its 2023 Gemera technical specifications also identify Dark Matter as a six-phase Raxial Flux e-motor.
| Motor | Published power | Published torque | Published mass | Other stated details | Source context |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quark | Up to 250 kW | Up to 600 Nm | 28.5 kg | Phase count and maximum rpm not stated on the cited product page | Koenigsegg current product page, accessed 2026 |
| Dark Matter | 800 hp | 1,250 Nm | 39 kg | Six-phase; maximum 8,500 rpm | Koenigsegg current product page, accessed 2026 |
The numbers above are specifications published by Koenigsegg, not independently verified comparative measurements. The two motors’ figures also should not be treated as a controlled head-to-head test.

What applications are claimed?
Koenigsegg says Quark could be used in marine, aircraft, and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) applications. It also argues that its speed and torque characteristics may allow direct drive without a step-down transmission in some applications. These are stated potential uses, not evidence that Quark is commercially deployed in each one. Dark Matter, by contrast, is identified as part of the Gemera drivetrain.

What is established—and what remains unclear?
- Established by the manufacturer’s public descriptions: Koenigsegg uses Raxial Flux for a mix of axial- and radial-flux characteristics and applies the label to Quark and Dark Matter.
- Published but not independently validated here: The motors’ output, torque, mass, and other specifications listed above.
- Not detailed in the cited public pages: The internal geometry needed to reproduce either motor’s design or assess its performance against alternatives from technical drawings or test data.
- Not established by the label itself: That all mixed-topology motors share a single design, or that combining the two approaches automatically improves performance.
