A RAW file stores image data captured by a digital camera’s sensor before the camera renders it as a finished picture. It gives editing software more room to interpret and adjust the image, but RAW is a category of camera formats—not one universal file type. Whether a file opens depends on its camera model, format, and the software’s support for it.

What is a RAW file?

Adobe’s Camera Raw documentation defines a camera RAW file this way: “A camera raw file contains unprocessed, uncompressed grayscale picture data from a digital camera’s image sensor, along with information about how the image was captured (metadata).” The documentation was updated September 25, 2026, and does not identify an individual author. Adobe Camera Raw documentation

That is a useful high-level description, not a guarantee that every manufacturer stores data in precisely the same way. RAW files can differ in compression, internal structure, metadata, and file extension. They are not ordinarily finished display images: a RAW processor interprets the sensor data and capture information to render a viewable result.

How does RAW differ from JPEG?

A camera typically processes a JPEG in-camera and compresses it into a ready-to-view image. With RAW, the camera retains sensor-derived data for later interpretation, so you can make more choices during processing. That flexibility does not make every RAW photo look better by itself; the result depends on the capture and how the image is rendered.

Why won’t my RAW file open?

“RAW” does not name one standard extension or encoding. Camera makers have used proprietary formats, sometimes with differences between models. Adobe notes that specifications for many proprietary formats are not public; the Library of Congress also describes camera RAW as a group of proprietary formats and notes that some contain encrypted data requiring manufacturer software. This does not mean every RAW file is encrypted or that common editing applications cannot open RAW files.

  1. Identify the camera and file type. Check the camera model and the file extension; both help determine which format you have.
  2. Check the editor’s supported-camera list. Confirm support for that exact model and RAW format, rather than assuming support for one camera means support for all cameras.
  3. Try the camera maker’s software or converter. Some camera-specific files need the manufacturer’s tool or a newer software version.
  4. Consider Adobe DNG Converter if your file is supported. It can convert compatible camera RAW files to DNG for use in workflows that support DNG.

What is the difference between RAW and DNG?

DNG stands for Digital Negative. Adobe introduced the format specification in 2004 as a way to address the spread of camera-specific RAW formats. Adobe describes DNG as publicly documented and non-proprietary. The Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative describes it as a wrapper for camera sensor data and metadata used to reconstruct, adjust, and display an image, based on TIFF/EP. DNG is still intended to hold RAW data for later processing; it is not simply a JPEG export.

Adobe’s DNG documentation identifies version 1.7.1.0, dated September 2023. Adobe says the format is supported by hundreds of software makers and names Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Lightroom Classic among the applications that support DNG. Its documentation, last updated September 8, 2026, says the free DNG Converter supports files from more than 600 cameras; check Adobe’s compatibility information for a specific model. Do you need to convert RAW to DNG?

No. Convert only if DNG fits the software or preservation workflow you want. Adobe presents DNG as an archival aid, while the Library of Congress notes preservation risks associated with proprietary formats. Public documentation may make a format easier to support, but it cannot guarantee that future software will always read it.

  1. First check whether your editing application supports the camera’s original RAW file.
  2. If it does not, check the camera maker’s converter and Adobe’s DNG Converter compatibility for your model.
  3. Convert if the resulting DNG works better in your intended workflow.
  4. Keep the original camera file when you want to preserve the untouched source or camera-specific data.

What Adobe’s RAW and DNG figures mean

Adobe’s DNG explainer gives two figures that should be read as vendor claims, not universal measurements: it says there are more than 500 different RAW file types and that DNG files are around 20% smaller than other RAW files while maintaining the same image quality. The explainer does not state a year for those figures; the size claim is not a guarantee for every camera or setting. Actual file size depends on the format’s implementation and settings.
