A power distribution unit (PDU) is a device that takes power from an upstream source and makes it available to several connected devices through multiple outlets. In a server rack, a rack PDU gathers the power cords of servers and other IT equipment into one unit. A PDU distributes power; it does not add electrical capacity to the circuit that feeds it.
What a PDU does
A PDU sits between an upstream source and the equipment it powers. That source is usually utility power or an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The PDU receives that supply and presents it at several outlets, so each device does not need its own run back to the wall or UPS.
Lenovo Press defines the term this way in its Lenovo 1U Basic PDUs Product Guide: “A power distribution unit (PDU) is a highly reliable, multiple outlet power strip designed to consolidate line cords within the rack and distribute conditioned power from an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or utility power to servers and other IT equipment.”

Two parts of that definition matter in practice. The first is consolidation: a rack PDU reduces the number of loose power cords a technician must manage. The second is that the output is shared. Every device on the PDU draws from the same input, so the PDU and the circuit behind it must be rated for the combined load.

Types of PDU
PDUs are sorted by how much they reveal and control, not only by how many outlets they have. Manufacturers do not use these labels uniformly, so the product specification sheet is the reliable reference for what a given model does.
| Type | What it does | What to confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Distributes power across multiple outlets with no load readout or remote features. | Lacks the measurement and control features of intelligent models, as described in the Lenovo product guide and Eaton’s rack PDU category page. |
| Metered | Shows electrical load, typically on the unit itself. | Where the measurement is taken. Eaton distinguishes metered input units, which measure at the feed, from metered outlet units, which measure at each outlet. |
| Monitored | Adds network-based visibility into load and status. | Whether monitoring is local or remote, and which values are reported. Terminology differs by manufacturer. See Lenovo’s guide. |
| Switched or managed | Adds on/off control for individual outlets, usually with monitoring. | Whether outlets can be switched remotely, and what network setup is required. Remote power cycling is useful, but it can cut power to live equipment if used carelessly. |
| Automatic transfer switch (ATS) PDU | Moves a single-corded device between a primary and a secondary source if the primary fails or becomes unstable. | Confirm both input sources and the device’s power requirements. Eaton describes this as a specialized redundancy option, not a general replacement for a UPS or facility design. (Eaton rack PDU buying guide) |
| Hot-swappable PDU | Has dual AC inputs and allows manual transfer so that a compatible UPS can be maintained or replaced without interrupting connected equipment, according to Eaton. | Exact product compatibility and the installation instructions for that model. (Eaton rack PDU buying guide) |
Schneider Electric’s rack power distribution range uses a similar set of categories. When comparing models across brands, match the measurement point and control features rather than the marketing label.

Form factors and mounting
Rack PDUs come in two common physical layouts. Which one fits depends on the rack, the cable routing and the free mounting space.
- Horizontal units are commonly 1U or 2U high and mount in a rack unit space, which uses part of the rack’s usable height.
- Vertical 0U units mount along the side or rear rails and leave horizontal space free for servers. Eaton’s rack PDU buying guide describes both forms.
Exact dimensions and mounting compatibility are model-specific. Measure the rack’s rail depth and confirm that the chosen mount fits before ordering.

How to choose a PDU
Work through these checks in order. Each one narrows the options the next one must satisfy.
- Confirm the electrical input. Match voltage, current, phase and inlet plug to the supply that will feed the unit. Eaton notes that rack PDUs are offered for different voltage environments and plug and outlet configurations.
- Add up the load. Compare the actual power requirements of the connected equipment with the PDU rating, the upstream outlet and the building circuit. Use the equipment’s own power data rather than nameplate estimates where that data is available.
- Match outlets and cord reach. Check outlet type, number, spacing and the length of the input cord against each device and the rack position.
- Choose the mounting form. Decide between 1U/2U horizontal and 0U vertical mounting, and confirm that the rack supports the intended layout.
- Select monitoring or control only if you need it. Basic distribution may be enough for simple setups. Metering helps with load visibility, and switched models allow remote outlet control.
- Follow the model’s installation documentation. Electrical and installation requirements vary by model and market. Involve a qualified electrician when the input, load or wiring calls for it.
No single type is best for every installation. Compare the same set of attributes across candidates: input voltage, current and plug; rated capacity; outlet type and count; form factor; measurement granularity; outlet switching; and whether the setup needs source redundancy.

Common misunderstandings
- A PDU is not extra power. Adding outlets does not raise the supply available to the rack. Overloading a circuit through a PDU is still an overload.
- “Monitored” and “metered” do not mean the same thing everywhere. One vendor’s monitored unit may report more or less than another’s, so check the reported values.
- Remote switching is not a substitute for redundancy. An ATS or dual-input PDU addresses a specific failure mode. A switched PDU lets an operator control outlets but does not supply backup power.
