A portable multimedia player is a handheld device designed to store and play digital media on the go. Depending on the device, that media can include music, photos, and video—and sometimes documents. The broader term is portable media player (PMP); “MP3 player” is a familiar related label, but does not necessarily mean the device plays only MP3 audio.
What does a portable multimedia player do?
A portable multimedia player keeps digital files on the device or its storage and plays them back while you carry it. The exact media and file formats it supports depend on the model. Samsung’s consumer definition includes audio, images, video, and documents, while Microsoft’s 2003 Media2Go announcement described a handheld platform for video, music, and photos.
“Portable media player” is often shortened to PMP. The term describes a broad device category rather than a specific operating system, design, or storage technology.

The terms overlap, but they are not exact synonyms in every context. A digital audio player (DAP) emphasizes audio playback. “MP3 player” is common consumer wording; the U.S. National Library of Medicine expands MP3 as MPEG-1 audio layer 3 and describes an MP3 player more generally as portable electronics for storing and playing audio and/or media files. The name alone does not establish that MP3 is the only supported format, or that the device cannot play video or show images.

Use PMP when discussing a device intended for multiple kinds of media, and DAP when the conversation is specifically about listening to audio. In everyday use, people may use “MP3 player” for either kind of device, so check the actual supported features rather than relying on the label.
How do portable media players store files?
Storage varies by design. Samsung lists hard drives, microdrives, and flash memory as possible storage types; IEEE’s technical overview also describes embedded and removable storage as design options. A device’s storage affects how much media it can hold, while removable storage—if supported—can provide another way to add or move files.

Where did the broader meaning come from?
On January 9, 2003, Microsoft announced its Media2Go portable media player platform as a prototype handheld intended to download, store, and play video, music, and photos. It is a dated example of the category encompassing more than audio; it is not evidence that the prototype or platform is currently available.

What should you check when choosing one?
If you are considering a dedicated player, match its specifications to how you will use it. IEEE identifies battery life, storage density, codec support, interface responsiveness, weight, and cost as design trade-offs. A screen matters more for video and photos, while audio use puts more emphasis on playback controls and headphone or speaker options.
- Media and formats: Check whether the player handles audio only or also video and images, and verify support for your own files.
- Storage: Compare built-in capacity and confirm whether the device accepts removable storage.
- Battery and portability: Review the stated runtime, dimensions, and weight for the way you plan to carry and use it.
- Controls and interface: Consider how easily you can browse and operate the player, especially with a large library.
- Output and connections: Confirm it works with the headphones, speakers, or other connections you need.
- Use and cost: Choose for your main purpose—such as offline listening, exercise, travel, or viewing photos and video—rather than the category name alone.
These are general comparison criteria, not specifications for a particular model. Check the manufacturer’s current details before buying.
