A hybrid plug-in vehicle—usually called a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)—has an electric motor and a rechargeable traction battery as well as a combustion engine and liquid-fuel supply. It can be charged from an external power source and can use electricity, fuel, or both to move. That combination distinguishes it from a conventional hybrid, which is not plugged in, and a battery-electric vehicle, which has no combustion engine.

What makes a vehicle a plug-in hybrid?

The defining feature is that its traction battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle into an outlet or charging equipment. A PHEV also carries a combustion engine and liquid fuel, typically gasoline. It therefore has two energy pathways: electricity stored in its battery and fuel used by its engine. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes these components and notes that PHEVs use both gasoline and electricity. EPA: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles

Charging is different from the battery charging that happens in an ordinary hybrid. A conventional hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is fueled with liquid fuel and replenishes its battery through regenerative braking; it does not plug in to charge. A PHEV can also recover energy through regenerative braking, but external charging is what sets it apart in everyday use. DOE AFDC: How Do Plug-In Hybrid Electric Cars Work?

How does a PHEV operate?

When the battery has charge, a PHEV can drive on electricity alone. Depending on its design and driving conditions, it may also use the engine alongside the electric motor. Some models run almost entirely on electricity until the battery’s charge is low; blended-mode designs can use electricity and gasoline together. The engine may engage when the battery is mostly depleted, during rapid acceleration, or when heating or air-conditioning demand is high. A PHEV does not necessarily remain in electric mode until the battery reaches zero. DOE AFDC: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

There are also different mechanical layouts. In a parallel hybrid, the engine and electric motor can both drive the wheels. In a series plug-in hybrid, the electric motor drives the wheels while the engine generates electricity. DOE AFDC glossary

How far can a PHEV travel on electricity?

Electric-only range depends on the model. DOE AFDC gives a broad estimate of about 15 to 60-plus miles for current PHEV models on one overview, and says most PHEVs can travel 20 to 40 miles on electricity alone on another. These are rounded general estimates, not a guarantee for a particular car. Check the model-year specifications and EPA label for the vehicle you are considering. Cold weather, high speeds, and accessory use can reduce electric range. DOE AFDC: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles · DOE AFDC: Electric vehicles · EPA: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles

Do PHEVs produce emissions?

Yes, when the vehicle uses gasoline, it produces tailpipe emissions. EPA states that “PHEVs produce tailpipe emissions when gasoline is being used as a fuel source.” The vehicle’s fuel use and emissions depend on factors including how often it is charged, how far it is driven, its design, and the source of the electricity used for charging. A PHEV should not be described as producing zero emissions on every trip. EPA: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles · DOE AFDC: Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

How are PHEV efficiency figures reported?

EPA labels report electricity-mode efficiency in MPGe—miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent—and gasoline-mode fuel economy in MPG. These are separate measures for different operating modes, so compare like with like and check which mode a figure describes. EPA: Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle—learn more about the new label

What to check for a specific vehicle

  • Electric range: Look up the exact model year rather than relying on a general range estimate.
  • Charging: Confirm the vehicle’s charging requirements and whether charging equipment is included before buying separate equipment.
  • Operating modes: Consult the owner information or vehicle specifications to understand when the engine may run.
  • Efficiency: Read the EPA label’s MPGe and MPG figures as distinct measures.
