PFP means “profile picture”: the image associated with an online account, often shown beside the account holder’s name or posts. A platform may call it a profile photo or avatar. It does not have to be a photograph of the account holder.
What does PFP mean?
PFP is shorthand for “profile picture.” It refers to the image linked to an account, rather than to a particular kind of image. Depending on the service and the account’s purpose, it might be a photograph, illustration, logo, or another graphic; each platform sets its own rules about what users can upload.
Platforms use different terms for this profile element. X calls it a profile photo, while Discord uses “avatar” in its profile customization documentation. The words often describe the same basic thing: an image associated with an account.
What is a PFP used for?
A PFP gives people a visual cue for recognizing an account. X says a profile photo appears next to each post, and Facebook says a thumbnail of the profile picture appears beside a person’s name in different places on the platform. How and where an image appears depends on the service.

An image can help distinguish one account from another, but it does not prove who controls the account. A familiar-looking photo is not identity verification.
Does a PFP have to be a photo of you?
No. “Profile picture” names the image’s role, not what it depicts. An account might use a personal photograph, an illustration, or a logo, subject to the platform’s rules and the account’s purpose. For example, Discord describes avatars as customizable profile elements.
Do not use someone else’s identifying image to make an account appear to belong to them. X’s authenticity policy prohibits deceptive impersonation and cites stolen or AI-generated profile photos used to create a deceptive fake identity as disallowed conduct. That policy is specific to X; other services set and enforce their own rules.

Do PFP image requirements vary by platform?
Yes. Dimensions, file formats, size limits, and animation support are platform-specific, not universal standards. X’s published guidance provides one example:
- Recommended dimensions: 400 × 400 pixels.
- Listed formats: JPG, GIF, or PNG.
- Upload size: Under 2 MB, according to X’s upload troubleshooting guidance.
- Animation: X says animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images.
These figures and rules apply to X, and platform guidance can change. Check the service’s current instructions before preparing an image. Discord, for example, says Nitro subscribers can upload animated GIFs as profile avatars, which illustrates why one platform’s rules should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
How is a PFP different from an avatar?
In everyday use, the terms overlap: “PFP” means profile picture, and “avatar” is a common platform term for the image representing an account. The exact wording and available customization options depend on the service. On Discord, for example, the help documentation calls the image an avatar and describes additional profile appearance options.

What should you keep in mind about PFP privacy?
Visibility depends on the platform and its settings. Facebook’s help page says a person’s current profile picture is public and that its thumbnail appears next to their name in different places on Facebook. Check Facebook’s current help information and privacy controls for up-to-date details before relying on that guidance.
