A neural wristband is a wearable input device that detects signals associated with intended hand or finger movement and turns them into digital commands. Many examples use electromyography (EMG) to sense muscle activity at the wrist. Despite the name, an EMG wristband does not read arbitrary thoughts from the brain.
What does “neural wristband” mean?
“Neural wristband” is a broad product or marketing term, not a standardized technical category. It usually describes a wrist-worn interface that interprets biological signals associated with movement—often muscle signals—and maps them to actions such as selecting, clicking, or scrolling.

Products can use different sensing methods and software, so the label alone does not tell you how a particular band works. For example, Meta describes its Neural Band as an electromyography (EMG) wristband, while Wearable Devices describes its Mudra approach using the company’s term “Surface Nerve Conductance” (SNC). These are product-specific descriptions, not interchangeable definitions for every neural wristband.

- It senses muscle activity. Surface electromyography (sEMG) uses electrodes on the skin to detect electrical activity associated with muscle activation. Meta describes its wristband sensors as measuring muscle activity at the wrist from signals tied to a user’s intended action.
- Software interprets the signal pattern. The device processes readings from its sensors and classifies patterns as gestures or input intentions. The sensor layout, decoding method, and any calibration requirements depend on the product.
- The interface sends a command. A recognized gesture can trigger a supported action, such as a click, selection, or scroll. What gestures are available and which devices can receive them depend on the specific wristband and its software.
In short, an EMG wristband is a muscle-signal input device. It is not the same as an implanted brain-computer interface or a scalp EEG system: the described EMG approach measures peripheral muscle activity associated with intended movement rather than directly decoding arbitrary thoughts.

What can a neural wristband control?
The intended role is alternative input: a person makes a subtle movement, and the wristband translates the detected pattern into a computer or device command. Meta positions its Neural Band for use with its Ray-Ban Display and Orion ecosystems. Mudra Link’s manufacturer describes its wristband as a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for Bluetooth HID-compatible devices, with examples including computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, streaming devices, and XR devices.
Those examples are not a promise of universal compatibility. Before choosing a wristband, check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list and confirm that the exact device, operating system, and desired input mode are supported.
Examples of neural wristbands
Meta Neural Band
Meta describes its Neural Band as an EMG wristband that reads wrist muscle activity and uses machine learning to translate signals into commands. It is intended as an input device within Meta’s display-glasses and AR ecosystems; that positioning does not make it a general-purpose wristband for every device.

Mudra Link is a separate product. Its manufacturer describes it as a physical wristband that functions as a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for Bluetooth HID-compatible products. Check Mudra’s current product information for supported devices and functions before relying on a particular pairing.
What do research performance figures show?
A 2025 peer-reviewed Nature study of a particular non-invasive sEMG research interface reported 0.66 target acquisitions per second in continuous navigation, 0.88 gesture detections per second in a discrete-gesture task, and 20.9 words per minute in handwriting. These figures describe test users performing the study’s specific tasks with its research interface; they are not consumer-product guarantees or benchmarks for neural wristbands as a category.

- Sensing method and placement: Find out what the product senses and where its sensors sit. Do not assume every device marketed as “neural” uses EMG.
- Supported inputs: Check which gestures and actions are available, such as selection, scrolling, or keyboard and mouse control.
- Setup and calibration: Review the manufacturer’s instructions for pairing, calibration, and any software installation.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your exact computer, phone, tablet, XR device, operating system, and intended input mode.
- Wearability and feedback: Consider comfort, wear time, and whether the product provides haptic feedback, if those details matter for your use.
- Privacy and data handling: Read the product’s privacy information to understand how sensor data is processed and handled.
The available product and study descriptions do not establish a fair performance ranking across wristbands. Compare the functions and supported devices each manufacturer documents rather than treating a research result or a category label as proof of equivalent performance.
