A “mobile phone virus” is a common name for malicious software on a phone. Security guidance generally uses the broader term malware: unsafe or unwanted software that can steal information or harm a device. A virus warning or a slow phone may be a reason to investigate, but neither proves the phone is infected.
What does “mobile phone virus” mean?
People often say “phone virus” to mean malicious software on a mobile phone. Google’s consumer guidance defines malware as “unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device.” Its Google Play policy describes harmful code more broadly: it may compromise a device, gain control, transmit data or credentials, spread spam, or defraud users. The policy covers threats including trojans, phishing, and spyware.
“Malware” is the more useful umbrella term. The official guidance cited here does not define the technical distinction between a virus and other kinds of malware, so it would be inaccurate to label every phone security problem a virus. Google’s Android malware guidance and its Google Play malware policy explain the broader usage.

What signs might indicate malware?
Google lists these as possible signs of malware on Android, not conclusive proof:
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
- Virus messages or security software that stops working.
- Unusual slowness, reduced available storage, or device malfunction.
- Persistent pop-ups or new tabs.
- Unwanted Chrome extensions or toolbars, unexpected redirects, or browser settings that change without your action.
- Messages sent to your contacts that you did not send.
A web page that suddenly claims your phone is infected is not, by itself, confirmation. Treat the warning as a prompt to check the device through its built-in settings and trusted support guidance rather than relying on the page’s claim.
What should you do if you suspect a phone virus?
On Android
- Check Google Play Protect. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then tap Play Protect. Google says Play Protect checks apps when installed and periodically scans the device. If it identifies a potentially harmful app, it may notify you, disable the app until it is uninstalled, or remove it automatically. See Google’s Play Protect instructions.
- Install available system and security updates. Check your phone’s Settings for Android and security updates; menu names can vary by device and Android version.
- Remove apps you do not need or trust. Uninstalling an app you cannot identify or do not trust is among Google’s recommended steps.
- Review your Google Account security. Check account activity and security settings for anything you do not recognize.
- Escalate if the signs continue. Google says a factory reset may be needed, or you can ask the device manufacturer for help. A reset removes local data, so preserve anything important first and follow the manufacturer’s reset guidance.
On iPhone or iPad
Apple’s instruction applies to a specific alert: the device says a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened. In that case, delete the flagged app; Settings can provide more information about the alert. Follow Apple’s instructions for this malware alert. That guidance does not establish that every unusual iPhone symptom is malware or that deleting an app resolves every possible problem.

Do Android and iPhone handle these warnings the same way?
| Platform guidance | What it covers | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Google describes Play Protect scanning and broader cleanup steps, including updates, app removal, and account-security checks. | Check Play Protect and follow the relevant cleanup steps in Google’s Android guidance. |
| iPhone or iPad | Apple addresses an alert identifying a specific third-party app as malware and saying it cannot be opened. | Delete the flagged app and consult Settings for more information, as described in Apple’s alert instructions. |
These instructions address different platform features and situations; they do not provide a controlled comparison that ranks Android and iPhone security overall.
