A managed Ethernet switch lets an administrator configure and monitor how devices communicate on a local network. Depending on the model, it can support features such as VLANs for separating traffic, quality of service (QoS) for prioritizing traffic, access controls, and network monitoring. The label “managed” signals a level of control—not a standard feature list—so check the specifications for the exact switch.

What does a managed Ethernet switch do?

Like other Ethernet switches, a managed switch connects wired devices and forwards network traffic. Its management features let an administrator change or inspect aspects of that traffic rather than relying only on the switch’s default behavior. The available controls vary by model. Cisco describes managed-switch capabilities such as security and QoS, and its documentation provides examples of VLAN, QoS, and SNMP configuration.

For example, VLAN support can help separate groups of devices into distinct logical networks, while QoS options can give selected traffic priority. Monitoring capabilities can help an administrator collect information about the switch and network. These features are useful only when the model supports the required functions and someone can configure and maintain them.

“Managed” does not by itself mean that a switch routes traffic between IP networks. Ethernet switching and Layer 3 routing are different functions; check the individual model’s documentation to see whether it supports routing.

NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Easy Smart Managed Network Switch (GS305E)
  • GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  • EASY SMART MANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Intuitive software interface offers Easy Smart Managed Essentials capabilities to configure VLANs, prioritize traffic with QoS, monitor ports, and manage network security for small businesses.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

How does it compare with unmanaged and smart switches?

Category What to expect Best fit
Unmanaged Designed for straightforward, plug-and-play connectivity, with little or no user configuration. Cisco says these switches begin forwarding traffic when connected. A basic network that needs more wired connections but not switch-level configuration.
Smart or smart managed Often offers a limited set of configuration options, between unmanaged and fully managed products in Cisco’s comparison. The label is not used identically by every vendor. A network that needs some controls, provided the specific model includes them.
Managed Offers configuration and monitoring functions, with the available features depending on the model. A network that needs deliberate segmentation, traffic prioritization, access controls, or monitoring.

These category names are useful starting points, not guarantees. In particular, “smart” has no universal feature definition. Compare the capabilities listed in a model’s current specifications rather than choosing by category label alone. Cisco’s overview explains its category distinctions at Managed Versus Unmanaged Switches; its comparison article was updated October 25, 2021: Cisco Unmanaged, Smart, and Managed Switches.

Do you need a managed or unmanaged switch?

Choose based on what the network needs, not on the assumption that more features are always better.

NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Easy Smart Managed Network Switch (GS308E)
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY GIGABIT MANAGED SWITCH: 8 x 1Gbps auto-negotiating ports work the moment you plug in — full-gigabit speed over Cat5e/Cat6 cabling.
  • MANAGED, WITHOUT THE COMPLEXITY: Easy Smart web GUI on Windows, Mac or Linux — no app or Windows-only utility, unlike many competing switches.
  • SEGMENT & PRIORITIZE TRAFFIC: Up to 64 VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping and port mirroring keep voice, video and data fast, secure and organized.
  • BUILT-IN PROTECTION: Auto DoS prevention, loop detection, broadcast storm control and cable test keep your network stable and easy to troubleshoot.
  • RELIABLE 24/7 BACKBONE: Rugged fanless metal housing runs cool and silent at 0 dBA — the managed switch trusted in homes, offices and small business.
  • Choose unmanaged if the goal is simply to add wired ports and you do not need to configure how the switch handles traffic.
  • Consider managed if you need VLAN-based separation, QoS, access controls, or monitoring at the switch.
  • Consider a smart switch only after confirming that its specific feature set covers your requirements; the label alone does not establish what it can do.

A managed switch also brings configuration and maintenance work. If no one needs or can manage its controls, a simpler switch may be a better fit.

TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Switch | Easy Smart Managed | Plug & Play | Desktop/Wall-Mount | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Support QoS, Vlan, IGMP and LAG (TL-SG108E)
  • 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Expand your network with 8 high-speed ethernet ports for enhanced connectivity and performance
  • Easy Smart Management: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface or free software
  • Support VLAN: Segment traffic with up to 32 VLANs simultaneously out of 4K VLAN IDs for better security
  • Network Monitoring: Monitor your network effectively with port mirroring, loop prevention, and cable diagnostics
  • IGMP Snooping: Enhances multicast application performance for improved network efficiency
  • Ports and speed: Confirm the number of ports and the Ethernet speeds your devices require.
  • Power over Ethernet: If the switch will power access points, cameras, or other devices, check whether it supports PoE and whether its available power budget is sufficient.
  • VLAN support: Confirm that the switch supports the segmentation you intend to configure.
  • QoS: Check which traffic classification and prioritization options are available rather than assuming all managed switches handle traffic the same way.
  • Security and access: Review the listed access-control and authentication functions, such as 802.1X when required.
  • Management and monitoring: Check whether configuration and monitoring use a web interface, command-line interface, SNMP, or another method, and make sure it suits the person who will maintain the network.

These are model-specific distinctions.
