A light-field camera records not only how much light reaches its sensor, but also information about the directions the light traveled. That added directional information lets software computationally refocus an image after capture and, in some systems, extract nearby viewpoints or estimate depth.

What is a light-field camera?

A light-field camera, also called a plenoptic camera, captures information about incoming light rays: both their intensity and their direction. A conventional camera sensor primarily records light intensity at each image location. The light-field approach preserves additional angular samples, giving software more information to work with after the exposure.

The term covers different camera architectures. A common plenoptic design places a microlens array between the main lens and the image sensor. The array encodes directional samples across the sensor; its geometry affects how those samples are recorded and interpreted.

How does a light-field camera work?

1. The main lens forms an image

As in a conventional camera, the main lens gathers light from the scene and directs it toward the sensor. In a microlens-based plenoptic design, however, the light passes through a second optical layer before it is recorded.

2. The microlens array encodes direction

Each microlens samples light arriving from different directions, rather than letting the sensor record only a single combined intensity measurement at that location. This gives the camera both spatial and angular information about the light field. The exact encoding depends on the optical design; not every light-field camera works in precisely the same way.

3. Software interprets and recombines the samples

Processing software can combine samples associated with a chosen image plane to produce a refocused rendering. It can also use the angular samples to extract nearby sub-aperture views. The camera therefore trades some sensor sampling for directional information; the resulting spatial detail and angular detail depend on the design and processing.

How does a light-field camera enable digital refocusing?

After capture, software selects and sums sensor samples corresponding to rays that would meet at a chosen focus plane. Changing which samples are combined changes the rendered plane of focus. This is computational refocusing: the camera records the information needed for alternative focus renderings, and software creates those renderings later.

Refocusing is not unlimited, and it does not mean every depth appears perfectly sharp in one ordinary image. The available captured samples, optical configuration, and selected focus plane constrain the result. In the geometry described by Christopher Hahne’s refocusing explanation, planes closer to the camera require combining samples from microlenses that are farther apart.

What else can light-field data reveal?

Nearby viewpoints

Because the capture contains directional samples, software can extract sub-aperture views—images formed from different subsets of those samples. This is a limited multiview capability, not the same as moving the camera freely around a scene after the fact.

Depth information

Some light-field systems are designed for depth measurement. Raytrix says its industrial cameras can record a 2D image and metrically calibrated 3D depth information in one shot with one camera and one main lens. That is the manufacturer’s description of its systems, not an independent performance comparison. Raytrix also notes that effective lateral resolution is highest at the focus plane and decreases as a subject gets closer to the camera.

Light-field cameras for consumer imaging and industrial measurement

Light-field designs have served different aims. An academic chapter distinguishes the consumer-oriented Lytro plenoptic 1.0 design from the industrial-oriented Raytrix plenoptic 2.0 design. These are historical examples of design approaches, not evidence that either is currently available for retail purchase.

For image making, a reader may care most about refocusing, viewpoint extraction, output detail, and compatible software. For measurement, important considerations include calibration, depth range, working distance, field of view, and measurement accuracy. A 2023 review of light-field measurement technologies emphasizes that design must suit the application and accuracy requirements. There is no single resolution, depth range, or quality level that applies to every light-field camera.

How is a light-field camera different from a regular camera?

Aspect Conventional camera Light-field camera
What is recorded Primarily light intensity at image locations Light intensity plus directional information
Focus after capture Usually fixed by the focus chosen during exposure Software can computationally render selected focus planes within the captured data’s limits
Viewpoint and depth operations Not supplied by the sensor measurement alone Directional samples can support nearby sub-aperture views; some calibrated systems also derive depth
Design trade-off Sensor sampling is used to form the image Some sensor sampling is allocated to capturing angular information

What to check when evaluating a light-field camera

  • Intended task: distinguish image-making features from industrial measurement needs.
  • Spatial and angular resolution: check how the design balances image detail against directional sampling.
  • Depth range and working distance: confirm that the system fits the distances and scene sizes you need.
  • Calibration and accuracy: for measurement, establish what calibration is required and what accuracy is supported for the application.
  • Field of view and focus plane: check how performance varies across the scene and around the intended focus distance.
  • Processing and file support: verify the software workflow and whether your required refocusing, view extraction, or depth outputs are supported.

These factors vary by architecture and system. Historical consumer examples and manufacturer descriptions do not establish current model availability or comparable specifications.
