A “hundred dollar PC” is a label for computing made as cheap as possible. It is not a hardware standard, and it does not guarantee that any computer sells for exactly $100. The phrase is most closely tied to One Laptop per Child (OLPC) and its XO laptop, which was built around a low-cost education goal. Read the term as a cost aspiration and a project identity, then check any specific price against its year, market, and buying context.
What the phrase means
The wording is ordinary language, not a technical category. It has been used in two related ways. The first is as shorthand for a specific low-cost computing project, especially OLPC’s “$100 laptop.” The second is more general: a computer intended to cost around a hundred dollars. A 2013 institutional publication uses “a hundred dollar PC” in a discussion of very low-cost computing, simple operating systems, battery operation, and places with limited electricity. That usage confirms the phrase describes a goal, not a fixed set of components.
Because the label is informal, the same words can mean different things depending on who uses them. The table below separates the three usages you are most likely to encounter.

| Project label | OLPC’s “$100 laptop” effort and the XO laptop associated with it | Names an aspiration and a historical project. It is not a universal retail price. |
| General category | A computer meant to cost around a hundred dollars | Describes a cost goal. It sets no required processor, memory, storage, or operating system. |
| Build budget | A do-it-yourself desktop a reader hopes to assemble for about $100 | Literal reader wording. An online question asking whether this is possible describes the budget as hard for a modern build. That is one person’s view, not a measured benchmark, and feasibility depends on current parts prices. |
Where the label comes from: OLPC and the XO
The best-known historical association is OLPC’s XO laptop. OLPC’s project FAQ describes the organization’s aim as developing a sufficiently inexpensive laptop to expand children’s access to knowledge and modern education. The FAQ says the project initially depended on large-scale procurement through national government agencies to reach economies of scale. It also notes that some of its information may be outdated, so treat it as a record of intent and distribution method rather than a guide to current purchasing.

Historical distribution and dates
A historical OLPC-related page links the “$100 laptop” label to the XO and reports initial distribution in November 2007. Those dates describe the original rollout only. They do not describe what the device costs or how it was sold in later years.
Design goals shaped by the target users
A 2007 design interview describes the XO as built for children. The features it discusses follow from that setting: wireless connectivity, low power consumption, a screen meant to stay readable outdoors, and a body designed to resist dust and impacts. These were the design goals of that period. They are not a current specification or a verified recommendation for any device a reader could buy now.

Why $100 is not a fixed price
The number in the label names a target. Actual cost depends on procurement, production volume, the market, and the distribution channel. Reporting on the XO initiative has used different cost figures across years and contexts, so a $100 figure from one source may not match another. When you see a price tied to this project, the figure only means something if the surrounding details are stated. Ask for these four points before accepting it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Year. Prices for the same hardware change over time, and a figure from 2007 says little about 2026.
- Market. A price in one country may include taxes, shipping, or subsidies that do not apply elsewhere.
- Buyer. A government purchase in bulk is not the same as a single consumer buying one unit.
- Condition and inclusions. Confirm whether the figure covers a new or used unit, and whether it includes a power supply, software, or peripherals.
What the label does not tell you about buying today
No current, broadly applicable statistic on the price or impact of hundred dollar PCs has been established. The phrase itself is not a measured figure. A present-day answer to “what can I buy for $100?” depends on regional prices, current stock, and the tasks you need the machine to perform. Those points change quickly and vary by country, so they need to be checked directly with retailers and in your own region before you spend money.

How to use the term accurately
- Use “hundred dollar PC” to describe the goal of very low-cost computing, not a specification.
- Link it to OLPC and the XO only as history, and give the year when you mention any price.
- Do not present the XO as a current $100 computer, and do not assume a $100 figure applies in every market.
- When someone claims a $100 computer is available now, ask for the date, region, and what the price includes.
The phrase is useful as a shorthand for affordable computing. It becomes misleading when it is treated as a price guarantee or a technical standard.
