A hidden dot file (or dotfile) is a file whose name begins with a period, such as .bashrc. On Unix-like systems, the leading dot is a convention that keeps the item out of many default directory views; it does not make the file inaccessible or secure.
What makes a file a dotfile?
The name is the defining feature: its first character is a period. A directory whose name begins with a period, such as .config, follows the same convention. Examples of dot-prefixed names include .bashrc, .profile, and .vimrc; which ones exist depends on the system and software installed.
Dotfiles commonly hold user or application configuration, often in a home directory. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard describes user-specific application configuration files as files in the user’s home directory whose names start with a dot. It recommends using a dot directory when an application needs several such files, with the individual files inside named without a leading dot. This is an organizational convention, not a rule every application follows.
Why is a dotfile called hidden?
On Unix-like systems, the leading dot tells ordinary directory listings and some file interfaces to omit the name by default. The file can still be addressed by its full name, including the dot. For example, if .bashrc is in the current directory, a command such as cat .bashrc names it directly.

Hiding is not access control or encryption. A leading dot does not prevent a user or program with the necessary filesystem permissions from opening the file.
How do you show dotfiles in a terminal?
In Linux and other Unix-like command-line environments, run ls -a to include dot entries in the current directory’s listing. Without -a, the ordinary listing commonly omits them. The Ubuntu command-line tutorial also shows that you can refer to a hidden file by including its leading dot in the path.

A related point of confusion is the shell wildcard *. The shell expands that pattern before running a command, and it normally does not match names that begin with a dot. That is separate from the listing program’s options: ls -a asks ls to include dot entries, while a command invoked with an already-expanded * may not receive those names at all. The GNU Coreutils FAQ explains this distinction.
How does this work in macOS Finder?
Apple’s archived File System Programming Guide documents that Finder and some user-facing interfaces hide dot-prefixed items automatically. It also describes other kinds of hidden items, so not every hidden file is necessarily a dotfile. The guide dates from 2018, and its description should be understood as documented behavior rather than a guarantee about every current macOS app or file browser. Apple notes that Cocoa filesystem APIs such as NSFileManager do not automatically filter invisible items by default.

What a dotfile is not
- It is not a special file format; the leading character in the name is what matters.
- It is not the shell
.command or the dot in a relative path such as./program. - It is not protected from access merely because it is hidden from a default view.
