A GPU mining rig is a computer configured to use one or more graphics processing units (GPUs) to perform cryptocurrency-mining computations. Its GPUs do the main work; the motherboard, processor, memory, storage, power supply, cooling, and mining software support them. A rig is hardware—not a promise of profit, nor a system that can mine every cryptocurrency.
How a GPU mining rig works
A rig supplies computing power to mining software connected to a supported proof-of-work network. Depending on the network and setup, a miner may also connect to a mining pool and use a wallet to receive or track rewards. The network’s rules, the software, and the GPU’s capabilities determine whether the hardware can participate; the rig does not validate transactions on every cryptocurrency network.
Mining methods and economics change as networks change. Binance Academy’s overview, updated May 21, 2026, describes how Ethereum’s 2022 transition to proof of stake changed the GPU-mining landscape. What a GPU mining rig includes
The exact parts depend on the cards, operating system, mining software, and intended network. There is no single universal component specification.

Lenovo’s overview also describes GPU rigs as purpose-configured systems whose power demand varies with the number and type of GPUs; it does not establish a wattage that applies to every build. Power, heat, and electrical safety
Power consumption depends on the GPUs and the rest of the computer, so there is no reliable universal wattage for a GPU mining rig. When evaluating a setup, consider whole-system power use alongside mining performance, heat, noise, cooling, and local electricity cost. A hashrate by itself is not an earnings estimate: network difficulty, rewards, pool fees, uptime, and electricity prices also matter.

Electrical capacity and cabling should be appropriate for the equipment. NVIDIA’s DGX A100 Station safety guide warns of shock and fire hazards, emphasizes grounded connections and properly rated cables, and advises consulting a licensed electrician or power company for site modifications. That is product-specific documentation; follow the instructions for each component and applicable local electrical rules rather than treating it as a universal wiring design. What the definition does—and does not—tell you
Calling a computer a GPU mining rig identifies its configuration and intended use. It does not establish that its cards support a particular network, that the hardware is compatible, or that mining will earn more than its costs. GPU prices, electricity rates, network rules, and mining economics vary and can change; any performance or cost estimate needs to be tied to a specific build, network, and set of conditions.
