A good internet speed depends on how many people and devices are online at once. For a single Netflix stream, the service recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, or 15 Mbps for 4K. Add more capacity for simultaneous streams, downloads, calls, and other activity. In the U.S., the FCC’s fixed-broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, but that is a policy benchmark—not a minimum every household needs. For online gaming, Mbps is only part of the picture: latency, jitter, and packet loss can affect play even on a fast plan.

How much speed do common activities need?

There is no universal speed target for every household. A useful starting point is the requirement of the service you use, then allow extra capacity for other people and devices using the connection at the same time.

Streaming video

Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD. These are per-stream recommendations from Netflix, not guaranteed household-wide speeds. Two people watching 4K at once, for example, need more capacity than one stream, and other online activity adds to the load. Netflix’s speed and connection guidance also notes that many factors can affect streaming quality.

Browsing and everyday use

Web browsing and email are generally less demanding than high-resolution video, but their experience can still suffer if the connection is congested or Wi-Fi coverage is poor. Video calls, large downloads, cloud backups, and multiple active devices can increase demand beyond simple browsing.

Online gaming

There is no authoritative universal Mbps minimum for online gaming that applies across all games, platforms, household activity, and connection types. A high download tier does not by itself guarantee low lag. Latency (the time for data to travel), jitter (variation in latency), packet loss, sustained bandwidth, and upload capacity can all matter. The Fiber Broadband Association, an industry association, highlights those factors in its March 3, 2026 discussion of gaming and broadband.

What does the FCC’s 100/20 Mbps benchmark mean?

The FCC’s fixed broadband benchmark is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. The commission raised it from 25/3 Mbps in its 2024 Section 706 report, and FCC material from 2026 says the 100/20 benchmark remains in place. This is a U.S. policy benchmark for fixed broadband—not a personalized minimum, measured average household requirement, or promise that a connection will perform well for gaming. Download speed affects how quickly data reaches your devices; upload speed affects how quickly they send data out. Both can matter when a household streams while someone else joins a video call, uploads files, or plays online. The FCC’s broad household-use guide groups rough download needs by the intensity of use and the number of concurrent users or devices. It explicitly says its figures are not based on FCC surveys or experiments, and it was last reviewed in 2020, so treat it as a rough illustration of concurrency—not a current, address-specific requirement. How to choose a speed tier for your household

Estimate what happens during your busiest ordinary hour, rather than choosing a tier based only on one person’s light use. Consider:

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  • How many people are online simultaneously, and how many devices each uses.
  • How many video streams run at once and whether they are HD or 4K.
  • Whether gaming, video calls, large downloads, or cloud uploads overlap with streaming.
  • Both advertised download and upload speeds, plus connection consistency and latency.
  • Plan terms such as price, data allowance, and any throttling rules.

The Netflix figures provide a concrete starting point for video; the FCC household guide offers only a rough way to think about simultaneous use. Neither establishes one perfect tier for every home. The right choice depends on the combination of activities and your provider’s available plans.

How to check whether your connection is fast enough

  1. Check the service’s stated requirement. For Netflix video, compare your connection with its per-stream 3 Mbps, 5 Mbps, and 15 Mbps recommendations for 720p, 1080p, and 4K.
  2. Run a speed check where the problem happens. Netflix says you can use Fast.com in a browser or the network check in the Netflix app on supported TV-connected devices. A result is a snapshot, not a diagnosis of the cause.
  3. Compare the result with your plan and activity. If the result is slower than expected during a problem, consider whether other users are consuming bandwidth at the same time. Netflix suggests contacting your ISP if its device check shows slower-than-expected speed.
  4. Check the in-home connection as well as the ISP service. Wi-Fi coverage, router placement, device capability, and the service itself can affect the result or experience. A router or mesh system may help only when wireless coverage or equipment is the bottleneck; it cannot increase the speed delivered by your ISP plan. Check compatibility and coverage needs before replacing equipment. FCC household broadband guidance

Why a fast plan can still feel slow

  • Wi-Fi coverage: A device far from the router or behind obstacles may not receive the connection’s full performance.
  • Congestion: Concurrent streaming, downloads, calls, and uploads can compete for capacity.
  • Latency, jitter, or packet loss: These can make online games feel laggy even when a speed test reports substantial Mbps.
  • Device or service limits: The device, app, or streaming service can affect the result independently of the plan speed.

For gaming, look beyond a single download-speed number when troubleshooting. A speed test can show a momentary result, but it does not by itself establish whether the ISP plan, Wi-Fi, device, or application is responsible.
