A gallium nitride (GaN) charger is a power adapter that uses GaN semiconductor devices in its switching electronics to convert wall power into power for electronic devices. GaN can support faster switching and higher power density than conventional silicon designs, which can enable a compact charger. It does not, by itself, specify a connector, wattage, charging speed, or device compatibility.

What does a GaN charger do?

Like any other AC adapter, a GaN charger converts alternating current (AC) from a wall outlet into direct current (DC) that a device can use. The distinction is in the power-switching components: GaN devices can switch faster than conventional silicon MOSFET solutions. That capability can reduce switching losses and allow smaller passive components, creating opportunities for higher power density and more compact designs.

Those are design possibilities, not guarantees about every product. A GaN label alone does not mean a charger will be smaller, cooler, or faster than every silicon-based adapter. Its actual performance depends on the complete charger design and on what the device and cable support.

Is GaN the same as USB-C or USB Power Delivery?

No. GaN identifies a semiconductor used inside the charger. USB-C describes the connector, while USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a charging protocol and specification. A GaN charger may have USB-C or USB-A ports and may support USB PD, PPS, or other features, but the GaN label does not establish which ones it has.

INIU Laptop Charger, 65W Type C Charger Fast Charging Block for MacBook
  • [One Charger. Less to Carry] Nearly 30% smaller than Apple’s 70W charger, it stays snug without blocking nearby outlets. Charge 3 devices at once; foldable prongs tuck away to prevent snags and scratches.
  • [65W Laptop-Ready Power] Charge a 14" MacBook Pro to 52%, iPhone 17 Pro to 67%, or Galaxy S26 Ultra to 78% in 30 min. Ready for cameras, drones, handhelds, and more.
  • [A Complete Pro Charging Kit] Includes a 5ft 100W nylon-braided USB-C cable built for everyday bends and pulls, with extra reach for desks, bedsides, hotels, and travel.
  • [Smart Power, Port by Port] USB-C1 delivers 65W solo; C1+C2 gives 45W+20W, C1+A 45W+18W, C2+A shares up to 15W, and all 3 run at 45W + 15W shared.
  • [Stable Power, Without the Guesswork] TempGuard checks heat 1,000×/sec to help reduce heat-related slowdowns and interruptions, limiting excess heat exposure for more battery-friendly charging.

With USB PD, the charger and device negotiate a supported power level; the cable and connectors must also be suitable for the intended power. USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) says USB PD Revision 3.1 enables up to 240 W with a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. This is a specification maximum for that defined setup, not a rating for all GaN chargers, devices, or cables. USB-IF: USB Power Delivery

What should you check when choosing a GaN charger?

  1. Required wattage: Check your device’s supported input and its manufacturer’s charging guidance or original charger rating. A charger’s maximum output is not what every connected device automatically receives; with USB PD, the device requests a suitable supported power level.
  2. Charging protocol: Verify that the charger supports the protocol your device needs, such as USB PD or PPS where applicable. GaN alone says nothing about protocol support.
  3. Port count and shared output: For a multiport charger, check both each port’s output and the combined output when ports are used at the same time. Manufacturers publish these details for individual products; a listed maximum may not be available to every port simultaneously.
  4. Cable capability: Match the cable to the power level you intend to use. For the USB PD Revision 3.1 240 W use case, USB-IF specifies a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector.
  5. Exact regional model: Confirm plug type, input-voltage range, safety certifications, product revision, and local availability on the product listing for your region. Specifications can vary between versions and markets.

What does “GaN charger” mean in practical terms?

It means the charger uses gallium nitride in its power-switching electronics. GaN’s switching properties can help designers make high-power adapters more compact, but the term is not a complete specification. To know whether a particular charger suits your device, look at its wattage, charging protocols, port-by-port and shared output, and cable requirements.
