A fungible token on Bitcoin can mean either bitcoin’s own interchangeable units or a separate asset represented through a convention such as BRC-20. BTC is Bitcoin’s native currency; a satoshi is a denomination of BTC, while BRC-20 uses data recorded in Bitcoin transactions to represent additional tokens. These are related, but they are not the same thing.
What does “fungible” mean?
An asset is fungible when units of the same asset, in the same amount and under the same conditions, can substitute for one another. For example, one unit of a fungible token is meant to be equivalent to another unit of that token. Fungibility describes how units relate to each other; it does not by itself say how an asset is issued, transferred, or enforced.
Is bitcoin itself a fungible token?
Bitcoin (BTC) is the native currency of the Bitcoin network. It is divisible into 100,000,000 satoshis per bitcoin. A satoshi is a unit of BTC, not a separate token standard.

Bitcoin records value through unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs. Transactions spend existing outputs and create new ones; a wallet’s spendable balance is represented by outputs it can use in later transactions, rather than by a consensus account balance. In ordinary use, satoshis are interchangeable units of the same native currency.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
How do Ordinals change the picture?
Ordinal theory assigns identifiers to individual satoshis so they can be tracked. An inscription can associate content with a particular satoshi, giving that satoshi an identity or significance beyond its amount of BTC. The Ordinals approach does not require a separate token or changes to Bitcoin’s consensus rules.
This creates a distinction between technical interchangeability and how people treat an asset. Satoshis remain denominations of BTC, but a satoshi with an inscription or collector significance may be valued or handled differently from an otherwise equivalent satoshi. That added identity does not turn the inscription into a new denomination of bitcoin.

What is a BRC-20 token?
BRC-20 is an inscription-based convention for representing token operations on Bitcoin. It uses JSON inscriptions to express actions such as deploying a token, minting units, and transferring them. Software that follows the convention interprets those inscriptions to derive token balances and operations.

This is not the same execution model as an ERC-20 token running through an Ethereum-style smart contract. BRC-20 is not Bitcoin’s native currency or a token standard enforced as part of Bitcoin consensus; its behavior depends on convention-following software and indexing. The BRC-20 creator has also cautioned against treating it as the definitive standard for fungibility on Bitcoin with Ordinals.

BTC, satoshis, inscriptions, and BRC-20 compared
| Term | What it refers to | How it relates to Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| BTC | Bitcoin’s native currency | Transferred through Bitcoin transactions that spend and create UTXOs. |
| Satoshi | A denomination of BTC; 100,000,000 satoshis make one bitcoin | Ordinary satoshis are units of the native currency. Ordinal theory can assign individual satoshis identifiers. |
| Inscription | Content associated with an individual satoshi | Can give a satoshi distinct identity or meaning; it is not itself a unit of BTC. |
| BRC-20 | A convention for representing token operations with JSON inscriptions | Separate from BTC and interpreted by software that follows the convention; not an Ethereum-style smart contract. |
How to tell what someone means by “fungible token on Bitcoin”
- If they mean Bitcoin’s native, divisible currency, the precise term is BTC or satoshis.
- If they mean an additional asset represented using Bitcoin transaction data, ask which protocol or convention they mean; BRC-20 is one example.
- If they mean an inscription associated with a particular satoshi, that satoshi may have an identity or significance that affects how users treat it, even though it remains a denomination of BTC.
These distinctions matter when evaluating a token: ask whether it is native BTC or a separate protocol-defined asset, how ownership and transfers are represented, what software interprets the rules, and whether the asset is intended to be interchangeable or to carry unique identity or metadata. Wallet, marketplace, and indexing support can vary, so the term “Bitcoin token” alone does not establish compatibility, liquidity, or safety.
