A digital audio workstation (DAW) is a device or software application for recording, editing, and producing audio. In everyday computer-based music production, “DAW” usually refers to the software at the center of the work; the full setup may also include a computer, audio hardware, microphones or instruments, and MIDI equipment.
What is a digital audio workstation?
The term covers both dedicated electronic equipment and computer software. DDEX, the music-industry standards organization, defines a DAW as “an electronic device or computer software application for recording, editing and producing audio files,” including songs, speech, and sound effects. DDEX’s Recording Information Notification terminology uses this broader definition.
In common conversation, people often use “DAW” to mean the software program they open on a computer. That software is typically the hub of a larger audio-production system, which might be as simple as a laptop using its built-in sound hardware or as elaborate as a computer-controlled studio. PreSonus describes these different DAW configurations.
What can you do with a DAW?
A DAW lets you capture, arrange, change, and combine audio. Although the tools vary by application, common capabilities include:
#1 Best Overall

- Touch-Sensitive 61-Note Keyboard: This fun modern 61-note keyboard with expressive touch sensitivity unlocks a simple new approach to making music, encouraging you to explore sounds and ideas in the moment-no previous experience required
- ZEN-Core Sound Engine: Features over 1000 Roland sounds that have influenced modern music for five decades
- Auto-Accompaniment Styles: Includes over 200 onboard music styles to enhance your performances
- Chord Sequencer Features: Chord sequencer with user editing features and over 300 ready-to-play presets
- Record audio: Capture vocals, instruments, or other sound as individual tracks.
- Edit and arrange: Trim, move, and organize recorded clips and MIDI parts into a song, program, or other audio project.
- Work with MIDI: Create or edit performance data that can trigger software instruments or control compatible devices. MIDI is a communication standard for electronic instruments, computers, and related equipment.
- Add instruments and effects: Use built-in virtual instruments and effects, or compatible third-party plugins, to shape sounds.
- Mix and export: Balance tracks, combine them into a finished mix, and export an audio file for sharing or further use.
These functions make DAWs useful well beyond making songs. They are also used to edit and produce speech, sound effects, radio and television material, film audio, podcasts, and game audio. MathWorks outlines DAW uses and related audio tools.
What equipment does a DAW setup need?
The required equipment depends on what you want to do. A computer-based setup includes DAW software and a computer, but not every user needs an external interface or MIDI controller. The computer’s built-in sound hardware may be enough for some projects.

- Audio interface: A separate interface can connect microphones and instruments to a computer. It is useful when you need to record external audio, but it is not a universal requirement.
- MIDI controller: A keyboard or other controller can help you perform parts or enter MIDI data that triggers software sounds. You can also work with MIDI without a separate controller.
- Audio or MIDI source: A recording setup needs sound to capture; a MIDI-based setup needs a source of performance data, such as a controller or data entered in the software.
Focusrite explains how interfaces and MIDI controllers can fit into a computer-based DAW workflow.
