A death cross is a bearish chart signal in which the 50-day simple moving average falls below the 200-day simple moving average. It shows that average prices over the shorter lookback have weakened relative to the longer one; it does not prove a bear market has begun or that prices will keep falling.
What is a death cross in stocks?
The conventional death cross occurs when a stock’s 50-day simple moving average crosses from above to below its 200-day simple moving average. Nasdaq’s glossary uses this definition: Nasdaq: Death cross.
A simple moving average (SMA) is the average of prices over a chosen number of prior trading sessions. The 50-day SMA reflects a shorter history and generally responds faster to recent price changes than the 200-day SMA. When it drops below the longer average, recent average prices have weakened relative to the longer-term average.

What does a death cross mean?
In technical analysis, the crossover is described as bearish. That label describes the relationship between two averages of past prices—not a guarantee about what prices will do next. The Boston Fed explains that moving averages smooth volatile daily movements, while StockCharts ChartSchool cautions that average relationships alone do not establish a definite trend: Boston Fed: Stock Market Report Endnotes and Definitions; StockCharts ChartSchool: Trading the Death Cross.

Because both averages are calculated from historical prices, a crossover is a lagging confirmation of relative weakness, not a precise early warning of a turning point. It does not explain why a stock moved or identify an ideal time to buy, sell, or short it.
Does a death cross mean stocks will keep falling?
No. A death cross is conventionally bearish, but it does not establish that the next move will be down. StockCharts ChartSchool puts the limitation this way: “While an asset is always in one of those two states, neither state can tell us that price is definitively in an uptrend or downtrend.” The crossover is one observation about past prices, not a reliable standalone forecast.

When can the signal be less useful?
Sideways markets can produce whipsaws
When a market moves mostly sideways, its averages can cross repeatedly without a sustained directional move. The Boston Fed notes that moving averages can cross frequently in predominantly sideways conditions. A crossover in that setting may have limited directional meaning.

The 50-day and 200-day averages incorporate prices from prior sessions, so their relationship changes as the underlying history changes. The crossover may appear after some of a decline has already occurred. There is no universal delay that applies to every stock or market.

How to read a death cross in context
- Confirm what the chart measures. Check that it uses a 50-day SMA and a 200-day SMA, and note which stock, index, or other instrument is shown. “Death cross” conventionally refers to this pair, but charts may use other averages or price series.
- Look at the broader price chart. Consider whether prices are trending or moving sideways. In a range, repeated crossings can be less informative than a crossover during a clear directional move.
- Compare like with like. When comparing securities or charts, keep the moving-average type, lookback periods, instrument or index, and date range consistent. A chart using exponential averages or different periods is not showing the same setup.
- Treat it as context, not an instruction. Use the crossover as one chart observation alongside the broader information relevant to your decision, rather than as an automatic buy, sell, or short signal.
