A “dark web browser” usually means Tor Browser: a privacy-focused browser that routes connections through the Tor network and can open onion services with .onion addresses. Tor Browser is the software; Tor is the network; and the dark web is a set of services reached through specialized networks. Using Tor does not make someone completely anonymous, nor does it mean every site they visit is part of the dark web.
What is a dark web browser?
The phrase is informal rather than the name of a separate technical category. When people say “dark web browser,” they generally mean Tor Browser, which sends traffic through the Tor network. The Tor Project describes it as a privacy-focused browser that routes traffic through Tor; that can help obscure a user’s IP address from the site they visit and provide privacy or censorship-resistance benefits. How are Tor Browser, Tor, and the dark web different?
- Tor Browser is the browser application used to access the web through Tor.
- Tor is the network that carries the browser’s traffic.
- The dark web refers more narrowly to services reachable through specialized networks or software, including Tor onion services.

Is the dark web the same as the deep web?
No. The deep web commonly means online material that search engines do not index, such as content behind a login. The dark web is a narrower term for services accessed through specialized networks or software. Everyday usage sometimes blurs the terms, but a private account page is not automatically a dark-web service. What are onion services?
Onion services are sites or other services reachable through Tor, typically using addresses that end in .onion. They are designed to be accessed through the Tor network rather than by an ordinary browser alone. Tor Browser can indicate when a connection is to an onion service. What does Tor Browser protect, and what does it not?
Tor changes the path traffic takes and can make it harder for some observers to connect a user’s network address with their browsing activity. What an observer can see depends on who they are and what the user does. A local network observer, the website operator, and the user themselves do not all have the same view. The Tor Project cautions that sites can learn a user’s identity when the user explicitly identifies themselves, for example by logging in.
