A Chromium browser extension is software that uses a browser’s extension system to add or change features. It can customize the browser interface, respond to browser events, or interact with web pages. Extensions commonly use a root manifest.json file to declare their components and permissions; how well an extension works or where you can get it depends on the browser.
What a Chromium browser extension does
Extensions are small software programs that customize the browsing experience. They are built with web technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, and can add interface features, observe browser events, or modify aspects of web content. Chrome’s overview of extensions describes the model in those terms.
“Chromium browser extension” refers to an extension built for the extension system used by Chromium-based browsers. It does not guarantee that an extension will behave identically in every browser based on Chromium. The Chromium project’s extensions design document describes compatibility with Chrome as a goal, not a complete, current compatibility guarantee.
How an extension is structured
Every extension requires a root file named manifest.json. It provides information such as the extension’s metadata, resources, permissions, and which files run in the background or on web pages. A minimal extension may consist only of a manifest; more capable extensions can include several components. See Chrome’s extension development guide and manifest file format.

Content scripts and service workers
A content script runs JavaScript in the context of a web page, allowing an extension to interact with that page. A service worker handles browser events and does not have direct access to the page’s DOM. These are separate execution contexts with different capabilities, not one script with unrestricted access to both the browser and every page.
Interface components
Depending on its purpose, an extension may also provide a toolbar action or popup, or a side panel. These components are optional; the manifest identifies the resources and components an extension uses.

What permissions mean for users
An extension declares permissions in its manifest. Required permissions support its core functions; optional permissions can be requested later when a user tries a feature that needs them. Host permissions specify which matching websites the extension may interact with. Some browser APIs also require a corresponding permission. Chrome explains these distinctions in its permissions guide and permissions API documentation.
Some permission requests or site-access patterns can prompt a warning or require user consent. Before installing an extension, compare the access it requests with what it says it does. Site access can allow meaningful interaction with pages on the sites covered by that permission; it is not just a technical detail.

Does a Chromium extension work in every Chromium-based browser?
No universal compatibility guarantee follows from the term. Chrome’s developer documentation is useful for understanding the extension model, but another Chromium-based browser may differ in supported APIs, implementation details, browser settings, or extension distribution. Check the target browser’s current documentation and store, and confirm that the extension supports that browser before relying on it.
Store policies can also change. For example, Chrome’s overview page states that the Chrome Web Store no longer accepts Manifest V2 extensions and points developers to Manifest V3 migration guidance. That is a Chrome Web Store policy statement, not proof of the current policy or behavior of every Chromium-based browser.
