A buckling-spring key switch is a keyboard mechanism in which a coil spring bends and suddenly buckles as you press a key. That movement produces a distinct tactile change and click, while a spring-driven hammer or flipper activates the keyboard’s sensing mechanism. The spring creates the feel; it is not itself the electrical contact.
How a buckling-spring switch works
-
You press the keycap, pushing down on a coil spring beneath it.
-
As the spring compresses, it bends and then buckles. That sudden change is the tactile event you feel, and it contributes to the switch’s audible click.

The spring’s movement drives a hammer or flipper that actuates the keyboard’s sensing mechanism, registering the keystroke.

Unicomp’s FAQ describes the actuation point as “the precise instant that you feel the tactile change.” The mechanism and the sensing method are separate parts of the design: the spring drives the action, but another component detects the keypress. Unicomp’s buckling-spring FAQ
What does a buckling-spring switch feel and sound like?
Expect a pronounced tactile change when the spring buckles, along with a conspicuous click. The mechanism is known for a loud, tactile character; it is not a quiet or subtle-feeling switch. The exact feel can vary with the keyboard and its construction, and the available sources do not establish a universal force rating or a single measurement that applies to every model.

How Model F and Model M keyboards sense a keypress
IBM’s Model F and Model M are the best-known computer keyboard families associated with buckling springs, but their sensing systems differ. Model F keyboards use capacitive sensing. Model M keyboards use membrane contacts actuated by the spring-driven mechanism. In both cases, the spring’s role is mechanical: it creates the buckling action and moves the mechanism that triggers key registration. PC Gamer’s Model M history and interview

| Keyboard | Sensing method | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| IBM Model F | Capacitive sensing | Its buckling-spring mechanism is paired with capacitive keypress sensing. |
| IBM Model M | Membrane contacts | The spring-driven mechanism actuates contacts on a membrane. |
| Unicomp Mini M | Not stated on the cited product page | Unicomp lists it as a buckling-spring keyboard; check its product listing for current configurations and details. |
The historical families and a current keyboard may differ in layout, size, connection, compatibility, and parts availability. Do not assume that a detail established for one model applies to all versions. IBM’s history of the Selectric typewriter also describes a buckling-spring mechanism in its keyboard, but that typewriter context does not make every Selectric, Model F, and Model M design identical. Can you install a buckling-spring switch in a hot-swap keyboard?
Do not treat buckling-spring mechanisms as drop-in switch modules for an ordinary hot-swap mechanical keyboard. They are associated with complete, model-specific keyboard mechanisms. If you want to try the switch, look for a compatible buckling-spring keyboard; if you are restoring an existing keyboard, use parts specified for that model and verify compatibility before buying.
A current keyboard example
Unicomp lists the Mini M as a buckling-spring keyboard. It is a complete keyboard, not a replacement switch intended for a standard hot-swap board. Check Unicomp’s Mini M product page for current stock, available layouts, connection details, and price, as these can change.

Why the name matters
“Buckling spring” describes how the spring behaves under pressure—not the keyboard’s electrical sensing technology. The sudden buckle accounts for the switch’s characteristic tactile change and click; the keyboard’s separate sensing system determines how that movement becomes a registered keypress.
