A baseboard management controller (BMC) is a small, embedded management computer that monitors and controls selected server hardware independently of the host operating system. Administrators can use it to check hardware status and, when the server supports it, perform remote management tasks even if the OS is unavailable. IPMI and Redfish are interfaces for communicating with management systems; they are not other names for the BMC.

What a BMC is

The DMTF Redfish specification defines a BMC as an “embedded device or service” that typically uses an independent microprocessor or system-on-chip and firmware to perform out-of-band monitoring and management tasks. In practical terms, it is a management computer inside or associated with a server, with access to selected hardware signals and a separate management interface. DMTF Redfish Specification DSP0266, version 1.23.0

“Out-of-band” means administrators reach management functions through a path that does not depend on the host operating system. That separation can be valuable when the OS is hung, misconfigured, or not installed. It does not mean every management function works with all power removed: behavior in that condition depends on the server design and its available power.

What a BMC can do

Capabilities vary by manufacturer, server model, firmware, and sometimes license. Common categories include hardware monitoring, event reporting, and remote control, but no single feature set should be assumed for every BMC.

Monitor hardware and report events

A BMC can read supported hardware sensors and report status or alerts. Microsoft gives overheating and out-of-range voltage as examples of conditions that hardware-management systems can monitor. The available sensors and alert details depend on the platform. Microsoft: Server hardware management

Control the server remotely

Depending on the implementation, remote functions can include powering a server on or off, restarting it, viewing its console, changing boot options, or attaching virtual media. Dell documents these capabilities for its iDRAC virtual console, including power cycling, boot-order changes, and virtual-media attachment; they are examples of a vendor implementation, not guarantees about every BMC. Provision, update, and inventory systems

Some platforms expose remote workflows for deploying an operating system, configuring a server, updating firmware, and collecting inventory. Dell’s Lifecycle Controller Remote Services guide describes such functions for supported Dell systems. Their availability and exact workflow vary by model, firmware, and license. What happens when the operating system is down?

Because the BMC has its own management firmware and does not rely on the host OS for its management path, an administrator may still be able to inspect hardware events, use a remote console, or issue supported power commands while the OS is unavailable. The exact options depend on the server and its BMC configuration. The BMC does not make a failed host OS operational; it provides a separate way to diagnose or manage the system.

  • Dual Headers Design for Remote and Local Physical Control: Two independent header sets allow simultaneous connection to JetKVM and your case’s original power/reset buttons. You keep full local control while adding remote power management without any conflict.
  • Single‑Cable for Power and Control: The built‑in USB‑C port delivers 5V power directly through the Extension Port to your JetKVM. No extra USB power supply, no messy splitters, no cable clutter. One clean connection does it all.
  • PCIe Bracket Mounting/Clean Cable Routing Without Using a Slot: Includes both full‑height and half‑height metal brackets.Uses any spare PCIe opening for neat cable exit. No actual PCIe slot required on the motherboard. Perfect for server racks, compact builds, or any case where tidy wiring matters.

Do not assume the BMC remains reachable when the server is completely without power. Out-of-band describes independence from the host OS path, not guaranteed operation in every power state. Consult the documentation for the specific server to confirm power behavior and which functions remain available.

BMC, IPMI, and Redfish: what is the difference?

Term What it refers to How it relates to a BMC
BMC The embedded controller or service that performs out-of-band monitoring and management. It is the management system being accessed.
IPMI A management interface/protocol. It can be used to access BMC functions. Dell describes IPMI as an interface for monitoring and configuring iDRAC.
Redfish A DMTF-defined, RESTful systems-management interface standard. It provides an interface for out-of-band management; Dell, for example, provides a Redfish API for iDRAC.

Redfish supports scriptable management and is designed around interoperability goals. Using Redfish does not by itself secure the management plane: access controls, network exposure, firmware, and configuration still matter. Dell describes Redfish as an interface for out-of-band management in its iDRAC documentation. Dell iDRAC9 User’s Guide: Redfish

How to secure BMC access

A BMC is a privileged management plane: its access may reveal sensitive inventory and allow actions that affect server operation. Treat management-network access, accounts, services, firmware, and auditability as deliberate security decisions.

  • Restrict network reachability. Keep management interfaces on a controlled management network and limit which hosts and administrators can reach them.
  • Disable services you do not use. Dell’s iDRAC documentation advises disabling unused services. Its guidance applies to the documented iDRAC implementation; check the current manual and settings for your server.
  • Review IPMI over LAN. Dell Technologies’ iDRAC9 Security Configuration Guide says, “If IPMI over LAN is not required, Dell Technologies recommends disabling this service.” If it is required, Dell recommends segmenting IPMI traffic, blocking access from outside the network, and disabling Cipher 0, which can allow authentication bypass. These are Dell recommendations for iDRAC; verify the relevant controls and guidance for the specific BMC and firmware you operate. Dell iDRAC9 Security Configuration Guide: Security best practices
  • Use appropriate protocol and account settings. Dell’s older iDRAC9 security guide recommends SNMPv3 where possible and network segmentation for SNMP. Confirm current recommendations, authentication options, roles, and available security settings in the documentation for your system. Dell iDRAC9 Security Configuration Guide: Security best practices
  • Maintain firmware and review access. Keep management firmware on a supported, maintained release and review accounts, roles, enabled interfaces, and logs as part of normal server administration.
