A “blue-chip NFT” is an informal label for an NFT or collection regarded as relatively established or prominent in its market. There is no universally accepted definition, cutoff, or official certification for the term. To assess a collection, look beyond the label at its actual sales, liquidity, supply, community, and the value of the specific token.
What “blue-chip NFT” means
The phrase borrows from the idea of established assets: it suggests that a collection has a record of prominence, trading activity, or perceived staying power. Those are judgments, not guarantees. A collection’s status can vary by publisher, index, marketplace, and point in time, so a useful claim should name who applies the label and what evidence supports it.

There is no single agreed market test. A floor-price threshold, inclusion on a particular list, or marketplace badge does not define the term for everyone.

How one index defines eligibility
Bitwise’s Blue-Chip NFT Collections Index is one published, provider-specific framework—not a universal standard. Its methodology focuses on arts and collectibles whose primary value is artistic, cultural, and community value rather than chiefly functional activity. It requires at least 100 related existing NFTs in one identifiable collection, and considers whether collections are freely traded, avoid undue foreseeable illiquidity shocks, and can be custodied in a way acceptable to professional investors. Bitwise’s index methodology explains the criteria.
#1 Best Overall
For valuation, Bitwise uses an adjusted floor price multiplied by existing minted supply to estimate collection market capitalization. Its method records floors and trades, counts trades within a 10% band of the last hourly floor as floor trades, and selects the lower of the 4 p.m. ET reported floor and last actual floor-trade price before converting to U.S. dollars. These rules describe how this index works; they do not prove that every collection included or excluded has a universally accepted blue-chip status.
What to check when evaluating a collection
Secondary sales and liquidity
Historical secondary sales volume can indicate meaningful interest and serve as a proxy for possible liquidity. But NFT liquidity is specific to the asset: selling requires a buyer for that particular token. A collection’s floor price does not promise that an individual NFT can be sold near that amount. Coinbase Institutional’s NFT market analysis discusses sales volume and the limits of liquidity.
Rank #2
Floor listings versus completed sales
Floor price means the lowest listed price in a collection, not its average item price; OpenSea says the figure updates in real time. A listing is an asking price, not evidence that someone will buy at that price. Bitwise’s use of actual trade data alongside floor data illustrates why a listed floor alone may not be enough. OpenSea’s glossary defines floor price.

Supply and value drivers differ among art, collectibles, profile-picture projects, and utility-centered NFTs. A framework focused on art and collectibles may not fit a token whose primary value comes from its function. Consider what holders are actually valuing rather than assuming the same criteria apply to every category.
Rank #3
Community and holder distribution
Community engagement, historical volume, holder distribution, and project-specific characteristics can all be useful signals. Their importance depends on the collection’s category; none is conclusive in isolation. Coinbase Institutional discusses these factors in its NFT market analysis.
Rarity and the individual NFT
A collection-level floor cannot price every token equally. Rarity describes the relative scarcity of an NFT’s traits within its collection. An unusual token may differ substantially from the lowest-priced listing, but rarity alone does not establish what a buyer will pay. OpenSea’s glossary explains rarity and other NFT terms.
Rank #4
A verification badge is not a blue-chip certificate
OpenSea says a blue check on a collection indicates a verified account with significant interest or sales under its review criteria. The badge is not an endorsement or recommendation, does not guarantee that the collection meets any specific requirements, and the criteria may change. Verification on a marketplace is therefore distinct from being called blue chip, and neither label means an NFT is low-risk. See OpenSea’s explanation of verified accounts and badged collections.
When checking authenticity, OpenSea recommends reviewing connected social accounts and the collection’s website. Its Stats view offers filters for category, chain, floor price, top offer, verification status, branded collection page, and metadata storage type. Those tools can help investigate a collection, but they do not replace checking its creator, contract, website, and market activity. OpenSea’s guide to Stats pages describes the available filters.

How to read claims about blue-chip NFTs
- Ask who is using the label and whether they have published specific criteria.
- Check completed secondary sales as well as current listings; a floor is an asking price, not a guaranteed sale value.
- Consider the category, supply, holder distribution, community, and token-specific traits together.
- Keep marketplace verification separate from claims about prominence, value, or risk.
- When comparing reported prices or performance, identify the collection or product, marketplace or index, measurement date, and unit.
For example, Bitwise’s product page reported a 12-month fund return of −66.1% and a since-inception return of −84.4% as of October 6, 2026. Those are historical results for that particular fund, not a measure of the whole NFT market or a forecast. Bitwise states that past performance does not indicate future performance and identifies investor and product restrictions on its fund page.
