In a CES 2024 interview recap, Intel graphics fellow Tom “TAP” Petersen described Meteor Lake as a promising fit for gaming handhelds because of its efficiency, and said Intel worked with MSI on the Claw’s cooling solution and board design. The January 11, 2024 account also covered integrated Arc graphics, low-power NPU uses and Intel’s then-in-progress Battlemage software work. It is an interview recap—not a Claw performance review or a statement of Intel’s current roadmap.

What Petersen said about Meteor Lake and the MSI Claw

HotHardware’s January 11, 2024 recap of PC World’s CES interview said Petersen considered Meteor Lake well suited to handheld PCs on efficiency grounds. He also described Intel working with MSI on the Claw’s thermal solution and board design. That collaboration is relevant to fitting a laptop-class platform into a compact device, but the recap provides no comparative thermal measurements or battery-life results. HotHardware’s recap

The Claw used a standard Core Ultra 7 processor

According to the recap, MSI’s Claw used a stock Core Ultra 7 processor rather than a custom chip made specifically for handhelds. Petersen was reported as open to Intel developing custom handheld silicon in the future. That was a possibility, not an announced product or commitment.

The recap also describes Petersen viewing Intel’s Core Ultra 7 165H and AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme as an apt comparison. That reflects his framing of the competing platforms; it is not a benchmark result. The article reports no measured Claw game performance, battery life or thermal performance.

How Meteor Lake’s integrated Arc graphics fit into the discussion

Meteor Lake’s integrated graphics are based on Intel’s Arc Alchemist graphics architecture. The recap suggested they could benefit from Intel’s ongoing graphics-driver work, which HotHardware characterized as having matured over time. That is context about the graphics platform and software—not evidence of a particular frame rate or a tested improvement on the Claw.

A handheld’s gaming experience depends on more than its graphics architecture: processor configuration, cooling, power limits, drivers, game compatibility and battery behavior all matter. The interview recap does not provide enough device-level measurements to compare the Claw with another handheld on those factors.

What the NPU could do in a gaming handheld

Petersen’s NPU discussion, as summarized by HotHardware, centered on low-power features that can remain available without continually relying on the main CPU or GPU. Facial recognition and gesture recognition were examples of potential uses. The recap also relayed possible future game applications, but those examples were speculative—not features demonstrated on the Claw.

HotHardware noted that the interview’s premise that the Claw was the first handheld with an NPU needed correction: the recap pointed to earlier handhelds using AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processors. This is the recap’s account, rather than a separately verified device-history survey.

What the interview reported about Battlemage

Battlemage was Intel’s next graphics generation under discussion at the time. HotHardware reported Petersen saying that first Battlemage silicon was in Intel’s labs and that 30% of Intel’s graphics engineers were working on Battlemage software. The 30% figure applies to the staffing Petersen described in that interview; it is not a current headcount or a measure of the project’s present status.

These are statements reported from a January 2024 interview, not confirmation of Intel’s current graphics roadmap. The recap summarizes Petersen’s remarks rather than providing a full interview transcript, so his points are best treated as attributed paraphrases.

What this recap can—and cannot—tell a handheld buyer

The interview offers useful context on Intel’s design goals and the Claw’s platform, but it cannot answer whether the Claw outperforms another handheld or is the better purchase. For those questions, a reader needs current, model-specific evidence on game performance, battery life, temperatures, software support and price. No such test results are presented in this recap.
