The molecule is a boron–nitrogen zwitterion reported in 2018, with a six-membered framework made from four boron atoms and two nitrogen atoms. It is described as a benzene valence-isomer mimic because its distorted ring enables an unusual bonding interaction—not because it is carbon-based benzene or behaves identically to it.

What molecule did the 2018 report describe?

A research team from Singapore and China reported a molecule containing four boron atoms and two nitrogen atoms. Chemistry World’s 8 October 2018 account identifies it as an inorganic analogue related to benzene valence isomers. The underlying paper is B. Su et al., published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 2018 (DOI: 10.1021/jacs.8b08025). The accessible account is a secondary report; the technical description here follows that account rather than an independent examination of the experiment or the paper’s full text. Chemistry World’s report

The compound’s six-membered B/N ring is highly distorted. The report highlights electron density shared through a σ-type, four-centre, two-electron interaction involving opposing boron π orbitals. That unusual bonding pattern is the key to the comparison with a benzene valence isomer.

What does “benzene isomer mimic” mean?

Benzene is a carbon-based molecule, C6H6. A valence isomer has the same molecular formula as benzene but a different arrangement of its bonds and atoms. The familiar synthesized carbon-based examples are prismane, Dewar benzene, and benzvalene. The 2018 B/N molecule is not one of these C6H6 isomers: it has a different elemental composition and a different bonding arrangement.

Here, “mimic” signals an analogy in framework and electronic structure. It does not establish that the inorganic compound is ordinary benzene, has benzene’s aromatic behavior, or matches a carbon isomer’s stability. A 2020 review by Kei Ota and Rei Kinjo explains that replacing atoms in benzene-derived skeletal frameworks with heteroatoms can produce inorganic analogues whose structures and electronic properties differ substantially from their carbon counterparts. Ota and Kinjo’s 2020 review

How was the B/N molecule prepared and stabilized?

According to the Chemistry World account, the researchers reduced a substituted diazatetraborinane using potassium carbide and used a crown ether to stabilize potassium counterions. The resulting crystals contained dimeric units: two B/N rings, two potassium atoms, and a tetrahydrofuran solvent molecule. These details describe the reported preparation and crystal composition; they should not be read as a complete account of the reaction mechanism.

How does it fit among benzene analogues?

In a 2020 review, Ota and Kinjo reported more than 200 computationally proposed C6H6 isomeric structures and more than 30 experimentally characterized examples of inorganic benzene and its valence isomers. Those are the review’s counts as of its publication, not current totals. The comparison below separates the 2018 molecule from the distinct examples discussed in the review and later work.

Example Composition or framework What is established
Prismane, Dewar benzene, benzvalene Carbon-based C6H6 valence isomers Ota and Kinjo’s 2020 review identifies these three as synthesized carbon-based benzene valence isomers.
2018 B/N zwitterion Four boron atoms and two nitrogen atoms in a distorted six-membered framework The 2018 Chemistry World report describes the unusual four-centre, two-electron interaction between opposing boron π orbitals. It is an inorganic analogy, not a C6H6 isomer.
P3N3 prismane-to-Dewar analogue Prismatic P3N3 species converted to a Dewar-benzene-like P3N3 structure A separate 2021 Nature Communications paper reports generation in electron-irradiated phosphine–nitrogen ices and isomer-selective photochemical conversion at 547 nm. This is not the 2018 B/N compound.

The 2021 result illustrates that inorganic analogues can undergo transformations resembling changes between carbon-based valence-isomer frameworks. It does not establish a shared preparation, bonding pattern, or stability with the 2018 B/N zwitterion. The 2021 P3N3 study

What should you take away?

  • The headline refers to a reported B/N zwitterion containing four boron and two nitrogen atoms.
  • Its distorted ring supports a reported four-centre, two-electron interaction involving opposing boron π orbitals.
  • “Mimic” means a structural or electronic analogy, not identity with benzene or proof of identical aromaticity.
  • The P3N3 photochemical example is a separate 2021 study, not another name for the 2018 molecule.
