In April 2001, Jan du Preez, then president of Infineon Technologies North America Corp., said the company was not planning layoffs and wanted to hire more skilled people. That was a statement about management’s intentions during a downturn—not a permanent guarantee about Infineon’s future workforce decisions.
What did the Infineon executive say?
EE Times reported on 2 April 2001 that du Preez said: “We are not planning to lay anybody off; in fact, we want to employ more skilled people.” He also criticized what he called knee-jerk reactions by companies laying off thousands of workers after a couple of bad quarters, saying that was not Infineon’s approach at the time. EE Times, 2 April 2001
Why was he talking about layoffs?
The remarks came amid a sharp downturn in DRAM prices and a weak outlook for the networking industry. Despite those pressures, du Preez said the company was not planning drastic measures. His comments concerned Infineon North America and reflected the company’s stated approach in that period; they should not be read as a promise covering every later year, region, or business decision.

Did Infineon later cut jobs?
Yes. In 2024, Reuters reported a worldwide workforce program involving 1,400 job cuts and 1,400 relocations. The report said forced redundancies in Germany were ruled out, an important distinction: a company can reduce or move roles globally while excluding forced job losses in a particular country. Those later actions do not change what du Preez said in 2001. They show why the statement is best understood as time-specific rather than as a lasting company policy.
How have Infineon’s workforce plans varied by site?
More recent company announcements describe both operational changes and expansion. In June 2026, Infineon said production at its Tijuana site would be transferred over several years, while there would be no immediate changes for employees, customers, or suppliers. The site employed several hundred people, according to the company. Infineon, June 2026
In July 2026, Infineon announced a €5 billion investment in Dresden and said the project would create 1,000 direct jobs. Infineon, July 2026
