India’s military transports are built for different lift tasks: the C-17 for heavy strategic airlift, the C-130J for medium inter- and intra-theatre transport and special operations, and the C-295 for tactical airlift. A published payload figure does not tell you whether a particular vehicle or piece of cargo will fit. That answer also depends on the aircraft’s cargo opening, internal dimensions, floor and restraint limits, delivery method, and route. Public government sources cited here do not provide the certified cargo-bay measurements or loading charts needed to confirm fit for a specific item.
How much can India’s military transport aircraft carry?
Official figures describe broad capability classes, not a guarantee that every load below the stated mass can be carried on every route or in every configuration.
| Aircraft | Published payload or class | Role and supported capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| C-17 Globemaster III | Approximately 75 tonnes of payload, according to a 2014 Ministry of Defence release. The same release gives approximately 4,500 km of strategic reach; both figures are stated as approximate. Ministry of Defence, 2014 | Heavy strategic lift, including troop movement, operations and disaster relief. |
| C-130J / C-130J-30 | No payload figure is stated in the official sources cited here. | Medium inter- and intra-theatre airlift, airdrop and air-landed delivery, special-forces insertion, rapid deployment and combat support. Ministry of Defence Ministry of Defence |
| C-295 / C-295MW | 5–10 tonne capacity, as described by the Ministry of Defence in 2022. The source also states endurance of up to 11 hours; this is not a payload-range chart. Ministry of Defence, 2022 | Tactical transport with a rear ramp, troop and cargo airdrop, all-weather day/night operation and short take-off and landing from semi-prepared surfaces. |
The C-17 source gives a maximum all-up weight of 265,350 kg, aircraft length of 174 feet and wingspan of 170 feet. Those are aircraft-level specifications, not cargo-compartment measurements or loading limits. Ministry of Defence, 2013

What determines whether cargo will fit?
Payload mass is only one part of a cargo-fit decision. A load must pass through the loading opening, fit within the usable cargo envelope, and be safely positioned and restrained. The aircraft must also be able to take off, fly the route and land with that load under the relevant conditions.

- Opening and internal envelope: cargo must clear the door or ramp and fit within usable bay length, width and height. External aircraft dimensions cannot establish these measurements.
- Floor and restraint limits: weight distribution, floor loading and tie-down or restraint limits matter alongside total mass.
- Configuration and delivery: pallet or vehicle compatibility and whether the load is air-landed or airdropped affect how it can be carried.
- Route and operating conditions: payload must be assessed against the actual route and aircraft configuration, rather than treated as a universal maximum.
The official public material cited here does not establish certified cargo-bay dimensions, floor limits, restraint capacities or mission-specific payload charts for these Indian fleets. It therefore cannot confirm whether a specific vehicle or outsized item will fit.
How the missions differ
C-17: heavy strategic lift
The C-17 is associated with heavy strategic transport. The government’s 2014 release reports approximate payload and strategic-reach figures, and describes the aircraft’s use for troop movement, operations and disaster relief. Those broad figures do not establish how much a particular load can weigh on a particular route.

C-130J: medium airlift and special operations
Official descriptions place the C-130J in inter- and intra-theatre airlift and special-operations roles. They identify both airdrop and air-landed delivery, as well as special-forces insertion, rapid deployment and combat support. A government account also describes a C-130J landing at Daulat Beg Oldie and its use in flood relief. Ministry of Defence Ministry of Defence

The government describes the C-295 as a 5–10 tonne class aircraft with up to 11 hours’ endurance. Its rear ramp supports troop and cargo airdrop, and the aircraft is described as able to operate from semi-prepared strips. The Ministry of Defence cites tactical relevance in northern and northeastern India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Ministry of Defence, 2022 Ministry of Defence

In its 2021 contract announcement, the Ministry of Defence said: “The aircraft is capable of operating from semi-prepared strips and has a rear ramp door for quick reaction and para dropping of troops & cargo.” The announcement covered 56 C-295MW aircraft: 16 flyaway and 40 to be made in India. That is programme history, not a statement of current delivery status. Ministry of Defence, 24 September 2021
What kinds of cargo do these aircraft support?
Official reporting on India’s COVID response gives examples beyond routine freight and troops. The government reported that C-17 and IL-76 aircraft moved empty oxygen tankers to filling stations. Transport aircraft also carried oxygen containers and cylinders, medicines, medical equipment and hospital supplies. Bio-safety cabinets and autoclaves were moved to support an additional medical testing facility at Leh. Government of India, COVID-response release

- Authentic markings available for two versions

These examples illustrate why cargo fit is an operational question, not just a tonnage comparison: bulky equipment, specialized handling, delivery method and infrastructure at the destination can all matter. The published examples do not provide dimensions or loading specifications for those individual loads.

What to check before asking whether an item will fit
For a real cargo-fit determination, the aircraft operator or authorized loading authority needs the item’s dimensions and weight, together with its packaging or pallet configuration and intended delivery method. The applicable aircraft loading documentation must then be checked for:

Without those aircraft-specific documents and load details, a public headline payload number cannot answer “Will this cargo fit in a C-17 or C-130J?” or “What cargo can a C-295 carry?”
What the 2026 Vayushakti announcement does—and does not—show
A 2026 announcement names the C-17, C-130J and C-295 among aircraft planned for Vayushakti and describes the exercise as demonstrating rapid airlift, rescue and evacuation, including conflict-zone operations in India and abroad. It is an announced exercise plan, not confirmation of completed results. Ministry of Defence, 2026
