IFSCA authorization is regulatory permission for a specific financial activity by a particular entity in an International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in India. It is not a guarantee of returns, protection from losses, or proof that an investment is suitable for you. Investors should verify the exact legal entity, permission, and validity dates in IFSCA’s official directory; firms must also meet any separate conditions that apply to their activity.

What IFSCA authorization means

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) says it was established on April 27, 2020, under the International Financial Services Centres Authority Act, 2019. It is the unified authority for developing and regulating financial products, services, and institutions in India’s IFSCs. IFSCA identifies GIFT IFSC as India’s maiden IFSC. Before IFSCA was established, business in the IFSC was regulated by the RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, and IRDAI. IFSCA: About Us

Authorization is tied to the entity and activity covered by the applicable framework. A firm’s brand name, group affiliation, or past claim of authorization does not by itself establish that a particular legal entity currently has permission for the service it is offering.

What authorization means for financial firms

Permission depends on the activity

IFSCA’s Capital Market Intermediaries regulations provide one example of activity-specific requirements. The IFSCA-hosted text lists activities such as broker-dealer, clearing member, credit rating agency, custodian, debenture trustee, depository participant, distributor, ESG ratings and data products provider, investment adviser, investment banker, and research entity. An IFSC unit undertaking multiple activities may obtain unified registration in the manner specified by IFSCA. The text also describes exemptions, so firms should check the rules for their precise activity and status rather than infer a requirement from a broad business label. IFSCA legal database

The legal database is a useful reference, but it says that the Official Gazette text prevails if there is a discrepancy. For a firm-specific legal conclusion, consult the applicable Gazette notification and current sector-specific rules. IFSCA legal database

A separate SEZ Letter of Approval is also required

In a circular dated April 3, 2025, IFSCA said regulated entities should maintain both valid and subsisting IFSCA permission and a separate Letter of Approval under the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005. The circular warns that expiry of the SEZ Letter of Approval or failure to renew it on time may lead to enforcement action, including cancellation of the relevant registration, license, recognition, authorization, permission, or approval. How investors can check a firm’s authorization

  1. Open IFSCA’s directory. Use the regulator’s official Entity directory.
  2. Search for the entity. The directory offers search by entity name, category, or subcategory. Search the precise legal name shown in the firm’s disclosures, not just its brand.
  3. Match the permission to the service. Check that the directory’s registration, authorization, or license corresponds to the activity the firm is marketing. A permission for one activity does not establish coverage for every service, affiliate, group company, or product.
  4. Check the record details. Compare the authorization number and date with the firm’s claim, review the validity-from and validity-to dates, and read any remarks that qualify the record. The directory also lists registered address, contact details, and website, which can help confirm you are looking at the right entity.
  5. Verify close to your decision. Directory information is a point-in-time record. Check it shortly before relying on the firm’s status, and consult current rules or the regulator where a discrepancy or material qualification appears.

IFSCA reported 1,260 registrations and authorisations as of June 2026. That is the authority’s overall count for that date, not confirmation that any individual entity currently has valid permission. IFSCA

What authorization does—and does not—tell investors

IFSCA says its 2024 Listing Regulations were formulated to protect investor interests and support fair, efficient, and transparent markets. These are objectives of the regulatory framework, not a promise that an authorized firm or listed product cannot lose value. Authorization alone does not establish guaranteed returns, principal protection, profitability, or suitability for your circumstances. IFSCA legal database

Use authorization checks to establish regulatory status, then evaluate the investment separately. Review the relevant product disclosures for its risks, fees, liquidity, and suitability; those attributes cannot be determined from a firm’s authorization status alone.

What to compare when checking two firms

  • The exact legal entity named in the directory.
  • The regulated activity and permission type, and whether they cover the service being marketed.
  • The authorization or registration number and validity dates.
  • Any directory remarks or qualifications.

These checks help establish whether the firm’s regulatory record matches its claims. They do not replace an assessment of the investment itself.
