SoL-Pi is an optional extension for the Pi coding-agent harness that aims to reduce repeated context and tool-interaction costs in long-running coding sessions. NVIDIA’s 2026 benchmarks report meaningful efficiency gains, but one comparison also shows SoL-Pi solving fewer tasks than Pi and Codex. The results make it a candidate for metered, long-horizon work—not a guarantee of lower bills or unchanged capability for every user.

What is SoL-Pi?

SoL-Pi is a standalone extension maintained by NVIDIA that runs on top of Pi. It uses Pi’s public extension APIs rather than patching Pi, is released under the MIT License, and is not an official Pi distribution, according to the project repository. NVIDIA describes its aim with the line, “Spend less without getting less done,” on the SoL-Pi project page.

The extension targets repeated costs that can accumulate as a coding agent works through a long trajectory. Its mechanisms are opt-in and disabled by default.

  • Action Fusion: an edit or write can run a follow-up validation command in the same tool call, avoiding an intermediate model decision.
  • Online Context Compact: completed subtasks can become compaction points. The extension checks projected savings and context-window pressure; after successful compaction, Pi continues the task.
  • ObservationPack: large tool outputs are archived locally and represented by a stable handle. The agent can retrieve exact pages later instead of replaying the entire output.
  • Evidence-Preserving Reducer: eligible diagnostic logs can be reduced to a compact receipt. Retained quotations are checked against the archived original; if validation fails, the original result is preserved.

The repository’s conservative example enables Action Fusion and ObservationPack without enabling either the reducer or context compaction. This lets users start with two mechanisms rather than turning on every optimization at once.

What did NVIDIA’s study measure?

NVIDIA describes its approach as a constrained-efficiency search: reduce cost or token use while meeting a predeclared capability-preservation criterion. The project reports exploring 152 proposed directions and retaining four mechanisms. It describes 535 executable training environments: 495 tasks built from GitHub issue–pull request pairs and 40 verifier-driven synthetic tasks. EdgeBench tasks and feedback were held out for final validation rather than fed back into the search. The project’s methods and results are described on the NVIDIA SoL-Pi page.

The accompanying paper, by Haozhe Liu and coauthors, was submitted to arXiv on September 17, 2026. Its abstract describes a 51-task EdgeBench evaluation. The figures below are NVIDIA’s study results, not measurements from an independent, reproducible test of the extension in this review.

Efficiency results depend on the comparison

On the 51-task EdgeBench evaluation, NVIDIA reports 44.7–49.0% lower recorded token traffic and about one-third lower API cost for SoL-Pi. The reported range is benchmark-specific; it does not predict a particular user’s bill. The same project reports that the combined SoL-Pi harness retained roughly 94% of Pi’s average score.

Another comparison points to a capability trade-off. On 63 Terminal-Bench 4 tasks, SoL-Pi solved 15, while Codex and Pi each solved 18. NVIDIA reported API-equivalent costs of $211.12 for SoL-Pi, $272.35 for Codex, and $286.45 for Pi in that study. These results should be read together: lower reported cost did not coincide with the highest solved-task count in this benchmark.

In three independent two-hour swarm trials, Sol with 20 SoL-Pi workers reached 1,127 cycles at $60.11. Sol with 20 Pi workers reached 1,366 cycles at $82.12. NVIDIA reports the SoL-Pi swarm result as 17.5% fewer cycles and 26.8% lower cost than the Pi swarm. Those figures describe the specific swarm setup and trial duration, not general per-task savings.

The paper’s abstract estimates hourly savings of $8.75–$13.50 against native Codex and Claude Code harnesses, and $4.36–$5.71 against Pi, using official API-equivalent pricing. The estimates vary by model backend; the abstract does not make them a universal rate for an individual workload. See the arXiv paper for its framing and evaluation.

Does SoL-Pi reduce API costs?

It can reduce measured token traffic and API-equivalent costs in the workloads NVIDIA evaluated. Whether it reduces your spend depends on how much repeated context and tool output your sessions generate, the model and backend you use, and whether the extension’s mechanisms preserve enough capability for your tasks. Savings reported on EdgeBench or in a two-hour swarm should not be treated as a forecast for a different workload.

Efficiency also does not establish lower latency. Action Fusion removes an intermediate model decision in some workflows, but aggregate spend figures alone do not show whether interactive responses will feel faster or whether the extension will improve end-to-end completion time for your tasks.

Is SoL-Pi worth using for long-running Pi agents?

It is most relevant to developers running long Pi sessions with metered APIs, agent fleets, or unattended exploration, where repeated context and large observations may accumulate. Short sessions may not repeat enough context or output for these mechanisms to pay off. Local or free models also offer less direct benefit from reducing API charges. These are workload-based reasons to consider the extension, not guarantees about its performance.

Before comparing an enabled setup with baseline Pi or another harness, assess the dimensions that matter for your work:

  • Task capability: compare solved tasks or task scores on representative work, not just token totals.
  • Cost and token traffic: keep model/backend settings comparable and note how cost was calculated.
  • Workload duration and repetition: look for long sessions that repeatedly carry context or large tool observations.
  • Latency and operations: measure response time and completion behavior separately from API spend.
  • Data handling: decide whether eligible logs may be sent to the configured reducer model and how local archives will be managed.

What are the risks of enabling the log reducer?

The reducer may send eligible diagnostic-log content to its configured model using Pi-managed authentication. If logs contain material that must remain local, do not send them for remote reduction. The fact that the full original is archived locally does not change what is transmitted when a remote reducer is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The repository says archives are stored in the session directory or, for in-memory/no-session use, in a private temporary directory. Temporary archives may remain after a session and are subject to host cleanup; they are not guaranteed to persist indefinitely. Consider the sensitivity and retention needs of diagnostic output before enabling mechanisms that archive or process it.

How to install SoL-Pi

The repository documents Node.js 22.19 or newer, npm, and @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent 0.85.1 as requirements. These are version-sensitive details; check the current repository instructions before installing, since requirements and commands can change.

The README documents both global and project-local Pi installation and a configuration-file search order. It also warns that project-level configuration takes precedence over user-level configuration rather than merging with it. Review which configuration Pi will load before assuming user-level settings will carry into a project.

Because the extension’s mechanisms are disabled by default, installation alone does not mean every optimization is active. Start from the repository’s documented configuration and enable only the mechanisms appropriate to your workflow and data-handling requirements.

What the review can—and cannot—establish

The article “What I learned from Sol-Pi: A Detailed Review” by GWA was published on MustBeTheCode on October 2, 2026. Its subject is NVIDIA’s project and the underlying research. The article does not provide a reproducible author-run test protocol, so it should not be read as an independent performance test. The benchmark claims above come from NVIDIA’s project materials and paper; they do not establish a universal performance guarantee or how the extension behaves across every Pi version and workload.
