Building multilingual product search taught Ohad Farkash that translating a shopper’s exact words is not enough. His OneFindMe project, which he describes as a free search layer for AliExpress supporting 12 languages, first resolves what the shopper means, then turns that intent into a short marketplace query and ranks the results. The lessons below are Farkash’s account of one implementation—not a description of AliExpress’s published ranking rules or a controlled benchmark.
Why literal translation can miss the product
A shopper may know what an item does without knowing its catalog name. Farkash gives the example of someone searching for “that little stone thing for face massage.” That phrase needs interpretation before it can become a useful product query.
In his experience, translating a phrase word for word can also change its shopping intent. Hebrew “לק ג׳ל,” for example, can be rendered as “gel polish.” Farkash says that query could bring back floor lacquer alongside nail products. The words have been translated, but the product category has not been reliably identified.

For high-traffic terms, he reports that a small curated keyword map outperformed a general model: the model sometimes produced plausible-sounding but incorrect category IDs. That is a project-specific observation, not evidence that curated maps always outperform models.

Keep marketplace queries short and product-led
Farkash reports that long descriptive queries performed worse in the marketplace API he used. His practical rule was to lead with the product noun and keep only one or two useful qualifiers.

Rank for signs of demand, not just a low price
Farkash says OneFindMe sorted candidates using order volume and lightly penalized listings without reviews. He found this approach led to results users clicked, though he provides no click-through rate, order-volume threshold, or controlled comparison.
In his system, price served as a filter rather than a ranking signal. This separates two different shopper needs: ranking can surface listings with evidence of demand, while a price limit can still remove options outside a shopper’s budget. It does not establish how AliExpress ranks listings internally.

Cache query resolution when inventory changes
Product availability can change, while the mapping from an unfamiliar phrase to a useful product query is more stable. Farkash therefore cached resolved queries instead of product results. He says this reduced latency; unfamiliar terms could be translated and cached on first use.
That choice avoids treating a cached product listing as reliably current. The article gives no latency figure, cache lifetime, or measured inventory-change interval, so it does not support a freshness guarantee or a quantified performance claim.

Adapt retrieval to the shopper’s country
A single global retrieval policy may not fit every market. Farkash identifies shipping thresholds, category economics, and modesty defaults as factors that can vary by country. In his account, the challenge was filtering irrelevant results without suppressing legitimate shopper intent.

The article does not enumerate all 12 languages or locales, or provide market-by-market measurements. For builders, the practical lesson is to treat country context as part of retrieval design and check that localization rules improve relevance without over-filtering.

What these lessons do—and do not—show
OneFindMe is presented by Farkash as a free, live multilingual search layer for AliExpress. His account offers concrete choices from building that product: resolve intent before translation, keep queries concise, use demand signals to order results, cache the relatively stable resolution step, and account for local context.
Those choices are reported implementation lessons. The account does not name the model or API version, describe a study design or sample size, or publish quantitative outcomes. It is therefore best read as a practical starting point for experimentation, not proof that the same configuration will improve every marketplace or language.
