Astronomers did not discover hydrogen as a new element. The 2012 report “Quasar hydrogen found” describes evidence for neutral hydrogen around the distant quasar ULAS J1120+0641, in a cosmic environment reported to lack elements heavier than helium.
What was found around the quasar?
The finding concerns gas in the environment of ULAS J1120+0641—not hydrogen inside the quasar, and not the first discovery of hydrogen. Chemistry World reported that astronomers observed large amounts of neutral hydrogen around the object, alongside a lack of elements heavier than helium. The report does not give numerical abundances, so it does not establish that heavier elements were completely absent.
How far back in cosmic history does the observation reach?
The quasar was reported at redshift z = 7. Chemistry World described the light observed from it as showing the universe about 772 million years after the Big Bang. That age is the report’s estimate for the epoch represented by the light, not a timeless or assumption-free measurement.
How did astronomers study the gas?
The team analyzed infrared spectral measurements made with the Magellan Baade telescopes in Chile. The 2012 report summarizes the observation and its interpretation but does not provide enough procedural detail to reconstruct how the measurements were converted into conclusions about the surrounding gas. It cites the original study by R. Simcoe and colleagues in Nature 492, 79 (2012), DOI 10.1038/nature11612.

What does the result tell us—and what does it not?
The observation offers a view of gas in a very young cosmic environment: the report describes neutral hydrogen that had not been ionized by starlight and an environment with few or no heavier elements evident in the account. It is a finding about this particular quasar observation. The report does not establish that all early quasars had the same surroundings, nor does it quantify the gas composition.
