Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has a terminal designed for 34 million passengers a year and handled 30.48 million in FY 2025–26, according to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA). AERA’s June 2026 consultation discusses proposals that could take the Southern Precinct to 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and add a 20 MPPA Northern Precinct terminal. Those are consultation-stage plans—not confirmation that a new terminal is open or that construction has begun.
What is Hyderabad airport’s passenger capacity?
AERA’s June 2026 consultation paper reports an existing designed terminal capacity of 34 MPPA and passenger traffic of 30.48 million in FY 2025–26. The traffic figure is approaching, but does not exceed, the design capacity cited in the paper. These are figures reported in a regulatory consultation, not a new independent passenger count. Is Hyderabad airport getting a new terminal?
AERA’s consultation discusses a proposed 20 MPPA Northern Precinct Terminal Building (NPTB). Paired with the Southern Precinct’s assessed 40 MPPA capacity, it would form a system of about 60 MPPA. The consultation is not evidence that the NPTB has opened, or that its construction dates and sequence have been confirmed.

The airport’s master-plan page describes a modular integrated passenger terminal and an ultimate capacity of over 100 MPPA. That longer-term vision should not be confused with the consultation’s nearer-term 60 MPPA configuration.
What upgrades are proposed in the existing terminal?
The proposed Southern Precinct enhancement focuses on how passengers and bags move through existing facilities, rather than relying on a material increase in terminal floor area. AERA discusses changes involving:

- Baggage reclaim.
AERA assesses that these operational and infrastructure changes could raise the Southern Terminal’s capacity to 40 MPPA. The consultation provides a capacity assessment, not a guarantee of shorter queues or specific passenger-processing times.
Will construction affect my trip?
The sources establishing the proposals do not confirm a construction start date, work phases, terminal closures, temporary passenger routes, access-road restrictions, affected security lanes or baggage belts, or additional waiting times. That does not establish that construction will be disruption-free; it means passengers should not assume a specific impact from the proposal figures alone.

In its June 2026 consultation paper, AERA states: “The Authority further expects GHIAL to maintain the required service standards at the airport after carrying out the aforesaid modification/upgradation at Terminal 1.” This is the regulator’s expectation for service standards, not a measured result or a promise that queues and processing times will remain unchanged.
