A home camera can document a rodent moving through the area it covers, but a quiet recording cannot prove your home is rodent-free. For a more reliable assessment, pair dated footage with a repeatable record of physical signs—especially whether new evidence appears after safe cleanup.
What cameras and activity records can tell you
Infrared video can help document nighttime rodent activity. A clip may show an animal at a particular place and time or reveal a route worth checking. CDC guidance describes infrared cameras as a documentation tool, not a way to estimate a household rodent population or prove that rodents are absent. A camera only captures what falls within its view while it is recording.
Physical signs can show activity beyond that view or recording window. CDC lists droppings and gnaw marks as signs of rodent presence; EPA also identifies nesting material, chewed food packaging, holes, and stale odors as possible signs. Neither a silent clip nor one old-looking mark settles whether activity is current.
Set up a useful monitoring record
- Choose a location to monitor. Start where you have seen signs or where food, shelter, or a possible entry gap may be present. Record the room and the specific spot, such as the back of a pantry or a wall edge.
- Write down a baseline. Note the date and time, location, visible sign, and any nearby food or access condition. Photograph a sign if doing so helps you compare it later. CDC’s urban rodent survey guidance describes recording signs and conditions, and notes that photographs can document particular problems.
- Position the camera toward a suspected route. If your camera supports infrared recording, it can help document activity in low light. Save any relevant clip with its date, time, and camera location so it can be compared with your written observations.
- Compare repeated checks. Record whether the camera showed an animal and whether physical signs appeared, changed, or recurred. A period with no footage means only that the camera did not capture an animal at that location and time.
- Use cleanup as a check only when it is safe. CDC says new droppings after cleaning indicate active rodent presence. Follow CDC cleanup precautions; do not sweep or vacuum untreated rodent waste.
A practical log can have one entry per check: date and time; room or exact location; camera position and whether footage showed an animal; physical sign and its location; cleanup or control action; and what you found at the next check. This is a household recordkeeping approach, not a CDC-required form.

How to interpret each kind of evidence
| Evidence | What it can support | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Camera footage | A visible animal was in the camera’s recorded view at that time; repeated clips may help document a route. | No footage does not prove absence. The cited guidance does not establish that consumer footage reliably identifies species or counts animals. |
| Droppings | Rodent presence. New droppings after safe cleanup are a stronger sign of ongoing activity, according to CDC. | A pile alone can be difficult to interpret as current activity. |
| Gnaw marks or damage | CDC identifies gnaw marks as evidence of activity in an area; EPA also lists chewed packaging and holes as possible signs. | Damage may reflect past activity and does not alone show that rodents are still present. |
| Nesting material or stale odor | EPA lists these among possible infestation signs; note where they occur and whether they recur. | An uncertain sign does not establish its age or the animal species. |
Clean signs safely before checking for new ones
Rodent urine, droppings, and saliva can transmit disease, and contaminated material can become airborne. CDC says not to sweep or vacuum rodent waste before disinfection. Its cleanup guidance includes ventilating a closed area, wearing rubber or plastic gloves, thoroughly wetting waste with a bleach solution or EPA-registered disinfectant, allowing the required contact time, and wiping it up. Follow the complete CDC cleanup instructions and the disinfectant label.
Once an area has been cleaned safely, check it again and record whether new droppings or other signs appear. CDC states that droppings found after cleaning indicate active rodent presence.

When observation should lead to action
Reduce access to food and shelter
Check inside and outside for possible entry points and seal gaps. CDC notes that mice can fit through an opening about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide. Reduce available food, water, and shelter as EPA recommends. See CDC guidance on sealing entry points and EPA identification and prevention guidance.

If you use traps or baits, CDC advises keeping them away from children and pets and following product instructions. Its trapping guidance says that if no rodents are captured for a week and there are no new signs, rats are gone; if new droppings, urine spots, or gnawing persist after one week, there may be an infestation. This guidance should be applied alongside the physical signs you record, not interpreted as proof from a camera’s silence.

Seek appropriate professional or public health guidance when signs persist, the evidence is heavy, activity is in inaccessible areas, or rodents may have access to heating or cooling ventilation systems. Observation is not a substitute for addressing an infestation or a contamination risk.
