In electronics, heat transfer compound is a thermally conductive interface material—often called thermal paste or heat sink compound—placed between a heat-generating component and a heat sink. It fills tiny surface imperfections to improve heat flow across the contact area; it does not replace the heat sink. In industrial heating, the same phrase can mean a different material used with bolt-on heaters.
How heat transfer compound works in electronics
Even surfaces that look flat have small imperfections. Those gaps can impede heat transfer where a component meets a heat sink. A thin layer of compound fills the imperfections and improves thermal coupling between the surfaces. MG Chemicals describes this interface role in its Application Guide: Heat Transfer Compound (document identified as appguide0204, approximately 2004).
Manufacturers describe electronic applications including semiconductor devices, diodes, transistors, thyristors, thermostats, power resistors, heat sinks, and radiators. The material is chosen for the particular assembly, rather than simply because it is called heat transfer compound.
The phrase has two different uses
| Context | What the term refers to | Example or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics cooling | A thermal interface material used between a component and a heat-dissipating surface such as a heat sink. | Electrolube HTC is a non-silicone thermal interface material. |
| Industrial heating | A heat transfer mastic used with bolt-on heating products. | CSI Heat describes its compound as containing graphite and one or more binders, with grades for different applications. |
When the subject is a semiconductor or electronic component, the phrase usually means interface paste. When it is a bolt-on heating jacket or panel, it may mean industrial heat transfer mastic.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
Specifications belong to individual products
Electrolube’s HTC product page lists thermal conductivity of 0.9 W/m·K and an operating range of −50°C to +130°C. Those figures describe that product, not heat transfer compounds as a category. CSI Heat lists a maximum service temperature of 400°F for its industrial Grade B compound; that is a grade-specific figure, not a limit for electronic paste.
These manufacturer specifications are not a controlled comparison between products. Conductivity alone does not establish that a material suits a particular assembly.

- WELL PROVEN QUALITY: The design of our thermal paste packagings has changed several times, the formula of the composition has remained unchanged, so our MX pastes have stood for high quality
- 100 % ORIGINAL THROUGH AUTHENTICITY CHECK: Through our Authenticity Check, it is possible to verify the authenticity of every single product
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners, Spatula incl.
What to check before choosing an electronic compound
- Operating range: Confirm that the product’s stated temperature range fits the equipment’s requirements.
- Material compatibility: Check whether the assembly permits silicone or requires a non-silicone formulation.
- Application requirements: Match the compound to the component, mating surfaces, and installation method for the specific device.
- Product documentation: Follow the manufacturer’s technical data and device-specific mounting instructions. Electrolube recommends application testing, and onsemi’s application note AND9814/D illustrates that paste installation guidance can be specific to a device context.
No single conductivity or temperature limit applies to every product bearing this name. Electrolube’s HTC specifications and its recommendation to test for the intended application are product-specific guidance, not a universal selection rule.
