A monitor can accept an HDR10 signal without proving that it can reproduce HDR especially well. To judge its capabilities, look for the exact VESA DisplayHDR certification and version—not just an “HDR” or “HDR-400” label—then check what the tier requires for brightness, contrast, color and dimming.
HDR input support is not the same as HDR display performance
HDR10 describes a signal format used by HDR content. VESA DisplayHDR is a separate performance specification that tests a display against defined criteria. A monitor advertising HDR10 support may accept compatible content, but that alone does not establish how bright, colorful or detailed its HDR image will be. VESA’s FAQ explains the distinction, and its DisplayHDR overview cautions that generic HDR claims—or names such as “HDR-400”—do not prove DisplayHDR certification.
That distinction does not mean a monitor without certification cannot show an HDR signal. It means the signal-format claim and the display-performance claim answer different questions. For a named, tested performance tier, verify the exact model in VESA’s certified-products list.
What a DisplayHDR tier tells you
A tier number is not just a peak-brightness label. VESA’s criteria cover luminance, color coverage, contrast and black level, among other requirements. The numerical tier summarizes a set of tests; it cannot by itself predict that every display at that tier will look the same. Review the criteria for the specific tier rather than treating its number as a complete picture of performance.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
For example, VESA’s displayed CTS 1.2 summary lists these criteria for two LCD-oriented tiers:
| VESA tier | Minimum peak luminance | DCI-P3 coverage | Static contrast ratio | Maximum black-level luminance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DisplayHDR 400 | 400 cd/m² | 90% | 1,300:1 | 0.4 cd/m² |
| DisplayHDR 500 | 500 cd/m² | 95% | 7,000:1 | 0.1 cd/m² |
These are VESA standard criteria, not measurements of an arbitrary monitor. The criteria page also covers full-screen color and other tests, so peak luminance alone is not a fair summary of the standard.

Why the CTS version matters
VESA released DisplayHDR CTS 1.2 on May 7, 2024. The update tightened luminance, gamut and bit-depth requirements and added tests covering color accuracy, contrast, black levels and subtitle flicker. VESA said CTS 1.1 certification would remain available through the end of May 2025; that transition period has passed. Check the CTS version shown for the exact model in the certified-products list, not just its tier name. VESA’s announcement describes the update.

How backlighting and OLED affect dark scenes
Many LCD monitors use a backlight. With global dimming, the backlight is adjusted as one zone; local dimming divides it into independently controlled sections. Full-array local dimming places LEDs behind the panel in a two-dimensional layout. OLED works differently: its pixels emit their own light and can be controlled individually. Those designs affect black level and contrast, which is why a peak-brightness number alone cannot describe dark-scene performance. VESA has separate DisplayHDR True Black tiers for emissive displays; see its technology explanation and tier criteria.

How to check whether a monitor has meaningful HDR credentials
- Find the full model number. Include the model’s family or regional suffix so you do not mistake a similar product for the exact one.
- Search VESA’s certified-products list. Look up the exact model at VESA’s database. Do not assume a certification applies to every product in a family unless VESA lists those models.
- Record the complete certification. Note the DisplayHDR or DisplayHDR True Black tier and the CTS version shown.
- Check more than peak brightness. Review the relevant contrast, black-level, color and dimming criteria, then compare them with the monitor’s published specifications.
- Check the rest of your setup. The source device, connection, operating-system settings and content must support the HDR mode you want to use.
What to check for HDR on Windows
Microsoft’s guidance is specifically for Windows, not a universal test of subjective image quality. It lists supported display and connection requirements, recommends HDR certification and advises looking for DisplayHDR 1.2 at tier 500 or higher. That is Microsoft’s recommendation for Windows use, not a guarantee that a display will suit every viewer or use case. See Microsoft’s Windows HDR guidance for the platform’s current requirements and settings.
Microsoft also notes that a Windows certification entry may be absent because the display lacks HDR certification or because its manufacturer has not published the information. Check both the manufacturer’s specifications and VESA’s database rather than treating the missing entry alone as conclusive.

Use certification as evidence, not a verdict
A verified tier and CTS version provide a more useful starting point than a bare HDR label. When comparing monitors, also consider peak and full-screen luminance, contrast and black level, backlight dimming or emissive display design, color coverage and accuracy, and whether your devices can deliver the signal you want. Certification establishes performance against a defined specification; it does not guarantee that a particular monitor will look good to every viewer or be the right choice for every use.
