Hazmat placards on trucks identify the general hazard class or division of material being transported. Their color, symbol, wording and class number warn about the kind of danger involved; they do not always identify the exact substance. A four-digit identification number or proper shipping name may provide more specific information.
What a hazmat placard tells you
The diamond-shaped placard is part of a standardized hazard-communication system. The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) says its colors, symbols and numbers designate the material’s hazard class or division—not necessarily its precise identity. The sign is meant to communicate the general type of danger, not serve as a complete cargo manifest. PHMSA’s community guidance explains the system.
How to read the marking without guessing
Start with the class or division
Read the symbol, wording and class number together. They indicate a broad hazard category. Color can help distinguish markings, but color alone is not enough to identify a substance or determine all the risks associated with it.

Some shipments display a four-digit hazardous-material identification number on the placard or on a nearby orange panel or white square sign. A proper shipping name may also be available. These details can help identify a specific material more precisely than the hazard class does; not every placard, by itself, names the cargo. PHMSA’s identification guidance and the 2024 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) describe how placards and identifiers are used.
#1 Best Overall
- Flammable liquid placards are pre-numbered with 4-digit identification number (UN 1993), hazard class (3) and DOT-required symbol.
- Hazard class 3 placards meet DOT placarding specifications of 49 CFR § 172.519 for hazardous materials identification.
- Use hazmat placards for shipping flammable liquid (diesel, n.o.s.).
- Up to 1-year substrate outdoor durability depending on preparation, application, geographic area and exposure conditions. Clean removability for approximately 6 months (depending on the substrate it is applied to and environmental exposure to UV and temperature). Adhesive will have a tendency to become permanent beyond 6 months.
- Hazmat placards measure 10-3/4" x 10-3/4" and are made of .0032" thick flexible vinyl film with removable acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive backing and 50# peel-off liner. Designed for temporary applications with a service temperature range of -40˚F to +200˚F and minimum application temperature of +40˚F.
What the placard means in an emergency
For responders in the initial phase of a transportation incident, the 2024 ERG provides a way to find preliminary guidance when the identification number or proper shipping name is not available. Its placard table directs readers to an initial guide based on the displayed hazard marking. For example, it points to Guide 127 for a FLAMMABLE (Class 3) placard, Guide 153 for a CORROSIVE (Class 8) placard, and Guide 111 for DANGEROUS or unknown-material situations.
If multiple placards point to different guides, the ERG advises beginning with the most conservative guide. Once responders obtain specific information about the material, they should use the more specific guide. These are responder procedures, not instructions for a bystander to approach or investigate a truck. PHMSA describes the 2024 ERG as a resource for first responders during the initial phase of a transportation incident; members of the public may also purchase it.

Why some trucks have different placards—or none visible
U.S. federal placarding requirements depend on the material, packaging and other load circumstances. A visible placard is not proof that every hazardous-material shipment must use the same marking, and the absence of a placard does not let an observer determine what is on board. PHMSA’s DOT Chart 17 summarizes rules and directs readers to 49 CFR Part 172 for the complete requirements.

For certain non-bulk shipments of Table 2 materials, the chart describes an exception below 454 kilograms (1,001 pounds). This is a limited rule for that category, not a universal exemption; a bulk package can create a placarding requirement even when the non-bulk exception might otherwise seem relevant. The actual answer depends on the applicable regulation and facts of the load. See PHMSA’s Interpretation #09-0055 for discussion of the exception.

Some loads have multiple hazards and may display more than one placard. PHMSA interpretations describe circumstances in which a DANGEROUS placard may substitute for certain POISON and CORROSIVE placards on specified mixed Table 2 loads, while a class-specific placard may still be required in other circumstances. Those interpretations are tied to their stated load facts and should not be generalized to every mixed load. See Interpretation #02-0043 and Interpretation #07-0171.
Where required placards are placed
Under the cited U.S. rule, required placards are generally displayed on each side and each end of the transport vehicle, subject to visibility provisions and an exception involving coupled vehicles. The exact requirements depend on the circumstances described in the regulation. PHMSA’s DOT Chart 17 is a summary, not a replacement for the full regulation.

What to do if you see a hazmat incident
Do not approach a damaged truck or spilled material to read a placard. Move away, stay clear of the incident and contact emergency services. The ERG’s directions about approaching from upwind, uphill or upstream at a safe distance are for responders and depend on the incident conditions; they are not a reason for the public to move closer.
