Removing the only active physical SIM takes that line off the cellular network. Calls, carrier SMS and mobile data tied to that line stop working on the phone until an active SIM or eSIM is available. Wi-Fi still provides internet, and a separate active eSIM or second SIM may keep working.
What stops working when you take out a SIM?
A phone needs an active physical SIM or eSIM for the corresponding cellular line. Apple puts it plainly: “Your iPhone needs a physical SIM or an eSIM to connect to a cellular network.” Apple’s iPhone cellular setup guidance explains the requirement; exact support varies by phone, carrier and region.
- Cellular calls: If the removed SIM was the only active line for your number, that line can no longer connect through the phone.
- Carrier text messages: SMS associated with the removed line is unavailable through that line. This does not mean every messaging app stops working.
- Mobile data: Data supplied by the removed line is no longer available on the phone.
The carrier controls what happens to calls, messages, voicemail, forwarding and account status while the SIM is out. Do not assume callers will hear a particular message, that texts will be delivered later, or that voicemail behavior will be unchanged.
Can you still use the phone on Wi-Fi?
Yes. Wi-Fi internet is separate from the cellular connection provided by a SIM. With Wi-Fi connected, internet-based apps and services can still work, although their features and behavior vary. Apple notes that when cellular data is off, internet services use Wi-Fi only in its iPhone cellular data guidance.

Carrier SMS is not the same as internet messaging, and an app’s ability to place calls or send messages over Wi-Fi depends on that app and its setup. Do not treat SIM removal as disabling the phone itself: it can still use Wi-Fi, run apps, and access locally stored content.
What if the phone has another SIM or an eSIM?
Removing one physical card does not necessarily disable every cellular line on the phone. A separately configured, active eSIM or second SIM may continue to provide service. Whether that is possible depends on the exact phone model, operating system, carrier and country or region. Apple documents Dual SIM support only for eligible models and carriers in its Dual SIM guidance; Pixel setup and dual-SIM behavior are covered in Google’s Pixel SIM and eSIM help.

Some phone models and regional variants are eSIM-only and have no removable SIM card. Check the support information for your precise model and carrier before looking for a tray or assuming a physical card can be used.
Does taking out a SIM cancel your plan?
Removing the card is not the same as canceling a mobile plan. Billing and cancellation follow the carrier’s account terms and process. Contact the carrier to confirm whether the line remains active, what happens to service while the card is removed, and how to cancel if that is what you intend. Apple’s eSIM guidance distinguishes deleting an eSIM from asking the carrier to cancel a plan.

Can removing or restarting the phone lock the SIM?
If SIM PIN protection is enabled, the SIM may lock when removed or after the phone restarts. You will need its PIN to unlock it. Do not guess: Apple warns that incorrect guesses can permanently lock the SIM. Follow Apple’s SIM PIN instructions or contact your carrier for help if you do not know the code.
How to remove and replace a physical SIM safely
- Confirm that your phone has a removable SIM tray. Tray design and SIM support vary by model and region; do not try to open a slot that is not a SIM tray.
- Use the tray supplied with the phone. Apple says to insert a paper clip or SIM-eject tool into the tray hole and push toward the phone. Do not force the tray. If it will not eject easily, contact your network provider or an Apple Store. See Apple’s SIM removal instructions.
- Note the card’s orientation. When replacing it, align the card’s notch with the tray. Push the tray back in without forcing it.
- For a replacement card, use the carrier’s process. A SIM must be compatible and activated for the line. Pixel support directs users to their carrier for SIM availability or support; do not assume an unactivated card will restore service. See Google’s Pixel SIM and eSIM instructions.
What changes if you convert from a physical SIM to eSIM?
A SIM card and an eSIM are different ways to provision a cellular line, but support depends on the phone, carrier and region. During Google’s documented Pixel physical-to-eSIM conversion, the old physical card no longer works; if you later need a physical SIM, the carrier must reissue one. Follow the carrier’s current transfer instructions rather than removing or discarding a card before confirming the conversion is complete.
