Creating a new Apple Account does not, by itself, replace your existing account or move its data and purchases. The change happens only when you separately sign out of an account on a device, switch the account used for purchase sharing, or use Apple’s purchase-migration feature. Apple now uses the name “Apple Account”; existing Apple IDs keep their current sign-in details. Apple’s account-creation instructions explain how to set one up, not how to transfer an existing account.
What changes when you create another Apple Account?
You get a separate sign-in for Apple services such as iCloud and the App Store. Creating it does not automatically sign your devices out of the account you already use, merge accounts, or transfer information and purchases. Those are separate actions with separate effects.
Before making a change, identify which outcome you want: a second account, a different account connected to a device, access to family purchases, or eligible purchase migration. In particular, creating an account is not the same as signing out of your current one.

Signing out disconnects that device from iCloud and signs you out of the App Store and other Apple media services, iMessage, and FaceTime. Apple says information stored in iCloud remains there, but is removed from the device unless you choose to keep a copy when prompted. Features that may be turned off include Find My, iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, iCloud Keychain, and Messages in iCloud. Apple Cash and Apple Card accounts are linked to the Apple Account and cannot be transferred to another account. See Apple’s sign-out guidance.

Prepare before signing out
- Wait for recent changes to finish syncing, and check iCloud.com or another device to confirm the information you need is available.
- Keep an up-to-date iCloud backup and make an archive or copies of important information stored in iCloud.
- Identify data that is not synced and make sure you can access it before proceeding.
- Read each prompt about keeping a copy on the device. If you only want to stop using selected iCloud features, changing those individual settings may avoid signing out altogether.
Can you move old purchases to the new account?
Not simply by creating a new account. Apple has a separate purchase-migration feature, and eligibility is not guaranteed for every account. Apple’s guidance includes a requirement that both accounts be set to the same country or region for purchases; review the current requirements before starting.
After purchase migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for Media & Purchases on Apple devices and apps. iCloud data does not migrate, so keep access to any information you still need in that account. Do not delete the secondary account as a shortcut: Apple warns that deleting it after migration means losing access to its purchases. Read Apple’s overview of purchase migration and the migration instructions before proceeding.

Is Family Sharing a better fit?
If the goal is to share eligible purchases or subscriptions with family, Apple recommends that each person use their own Apple Account and use Family Sharing. Sharing applies only to eligible content and services; it does not make every purchase or subscription available to everyone in the group. Learn how Family Sharing works and why each family member should have their own account.
The account used for purchase sharing can be changed, but changing it may remove family members’ access to purchases and subscriptions associated with the previous account. Apple says this account can be changed once every 90 days. Follow Apple’s instructions for using a different account to share purchases only after checking what the family currently shares.

How do you create the new account?
Apple supports account creation on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, Windows through Apple Music or Apple TV, and the web. The exact steps and payment or age requirements can vary by method and region. In general, you provide an email address or eligible sign-in identifier, verify it, create a password, choose a country or region, and configure two-factor authentication. Apple’s current steps are on its account-creation page.
If the App Store does not show “Create New Apple Account,” Apple advises checking that you are signed out of iCloud. Creating the account still does not sign out another account from your other devices.
