When you click a link, your browser starts a navigation, finds or reuses a route to the site, requests a document, and turns the response into a page you can see and use. That journey involves the browser, network services, servers, and rendering work—and it often includes many requests, not just one. This is a simplified model: browsers can handle steps differently, and cached results or existing connections can change the path.
What happens when you click a link?
A link points to a destination. Clicking it tells the browser to navigate there, typically by making an HTTP request for a resource. The first requested resource is often an HTML document, but the exact request depends on the link and the destination.
HTTP is the request-and-response conversation between a browser and a server. The browser asks for a resource; the response includes headers and content. A successful response can provide the requested page, while other responses can indicate different outcomes.
How does the browser find the website?
DNS resolves the site name
People use names such as a website’s domain, while network communication needs an IP address. The browser uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to resolve the name to an address. DNS helps the browser find where to send a request; it does not download the page itself.

A connection carries the request
For a new connection, the browser and the destination establish transport communication before exchanging HTTP data. Google’s instructional example shows DNS resolution followed by a TCP three-way handshake and then an HTTP GET request. That sequence is a teaching example, not a guarantee that every visit performs a fresh lookup or opens a new connection: cached DNS results and reusable connections can change the path.
What does the server send back?
The browser requests the document, commonly HTML. The server’s response has headers and content; the browser uses the response to continue loading the page. “The server” may be a logical service backed by multiple servers, caches, proxies, or other components rather than one computer.

Receiving the initial document is only part of the work. As the browser reads the HTML, it can discover references to stylesheets, scripts, images, and other media. It then makes additional requests for those resources. JavaScript can also request more resources later, so a page commonly involves multiple HTTP requests.

How does the browser turn the response into a page?
It parses structure and styling
The browser parses HTML into a Document Object Model (DOM), a structured representation of the document. It processes CSS into style information that describes how elements should appear. HTML provides the document’s structure, CSS informs its presentation, and JavaScript can add behavior or modify the document.

It lays out and paints visible content
Using document and style information, the browser determines which content is visible and where it belongs, then paints pixels to the screen. This work can begin as data arrives; the browser does not always wait for the entire page and every resource before showing anything. Later-arriving resources or script changes can update what is displayed.
Why can a page appear before it is ready to use?
Loading is not one instant. A browser may display content while scripts are still running or other resources are still arriving. If JavaScript occupies the browser’s main thread, the page can be visible while responding slowly to clicks or other input. Seeing content, finishing the load, and being ready for interaction are related but distinct states.

How can this journey help you understand a loading problem?
The stages offer a first mental map, not a definitive diagnostic procedure. A name-resolution issue points toward the DNS part of the journey. A connection or response issue belongs nearer the network and request path. If the document responds but the page looks incomplete or incorrect, resource discovery, styling, scripts, or browser processing may be involved.
