Adding graphene to Silly Putty-like silicone can make the material’s electrical resistance change when it is stretched or pressed. Researchers call the composite G-putty. It has shown striking sensitivity in laboratory demonstrations, but bulk G-putty’s viscoelastic behavior makes its signal difficult to use reliably as a practical sensor.
How graphene turns silicone putty into a sensor material
In 2016, Conor S. Boland and coauthors reported adding graphene to lightly cross-linked polysilicone, a material often encountered as Silly Putty. The resulting graphene–polymer composite conducts electricity, and its resistance responds to mechanical deformation. Ordinary Silly Putty is not thereby conductive or a sensor: the reported effect depends on the graphene composite and an electrical measurement setup.
The response is not simply “stretch it and resistance rises by a predictable amount.” The researchers observed that resistance could relax over time after deformation, and that resistivity could change nonmonotonically as strain increased. They associated these behaviors with graphene nanosheets moving within the low-viscosity polymer. Boland et al.’s 2016 paper record describes this electromechanical response.

The 2016 study reported gauge factors greater than 500 and demonstrated measurements involving pulse, blood pressure, and the impact associated with a small spider’s footsteps. These are research demonstrations of sensitivity, not evidence that G-putty is a clinically validated medical device, can diagnose a condition, or is available as a consumer sensor. How a later soft-tubing sensor was made and read
A 2020 study explored a graphene-and-Silly-Putty soft-matrix sensor for detecting deformation in Tygon tubing used to pump fluids through microfluidic devices. The paper’s materials record lists graphene, Silly Putty, acetone, and silicone oil with a viscosity of 5 cSt. Its electrical resistance change was read with a voltage-divider circuit. The target was tubing deformation, with the authors noting possible use on other shapes and soft materials; this was a laboratory fabrication approach, not a ready-made sensor. Why bulk G-putty’s sensitivity was not enough
High sensitivity does not guarantee a useful sensor. Bulk G-putty is extremely viscoelastic: its electrical response can depend on deformation history and how quickly or how often it is deformed. That hysteresis and rate-/frequency-dependence make readings harder to interpret consistently. In the 2021 paper, Daniel P. O’Driscoll and coauthors wrote that, despite its high electromechanical sensitivity, bulk G-putty’s extreme viscoelasticity “renders it completely unsuitable for real sensors” because of these effects. How printed G-putty films address the problem
The 2021 study converted G-putty into an ink and printed patterned thin films on elastic substrates. In that reported design, the substrate’s mechanical influence suppressed hysteresis and removed the observed rate- and frequency-dependence. The authors also reported a conductivity increase of 106 in their printed thin-film configuration compared with bulk material; this result describes that configuration, not every graphene-putty mixture. What the research does—and does not—establish
- Graphene-enhanced silicone putty is a research composite, not ordinary Silly Putty acting as a sensor by itself.
- The pulse and blood-pressure demonstrations do not establish clinical validation, regulatory clearance, or current medical use.
- The studies describe laboratory fabrication and readout methods; they do not establish a commercially available graphene–Silly Putty sensor or a current retail price.
- For any claimed performance, the material formulation, sensor geometry, substrate, deformation conditions, and readout circuit matter; results from one setup should not be generalized to all mixtures.
