If you accidentally Like a Facebook photo and then tap Like again to undo it, the Like is removed. But you cannot tell from the available information whether the photo’s owner already saw a notification. They may have noticed an alert before you unliked the photo; there is no reliable guarantee that acting quickly prevents that.
What happens to the Like?
Tapping or clicking the active Like control again removes your Like from the photo. The exact label or placement can vary with the Facebook app version, but use the photo’s Like control to undo the reaction. Rick’s Daily Tips describes this same action in its 2021 guidance.
Will the person get a notification?
Possibly—but there is no way to determine from the available guidance whether the owner received or saw one. Meta’s notification help page covers choosing notification categories and SMS preferences; it does not say whether unliking retracts an already delivered Like alert. It also does not establish exactly when an alert is generated or whether an in-app or push notification can be recalled.
The person might see an alert before you unlike the photo or before they check Facebook. A notification that has already appeared on a device may not be the same as what remains visible in Facebook later. Rick’s Daily Tips discusses this possibility, but it is secondary advice, not an official rule about how Facebook handles every Like.
#1 Best Overall
Notification settings, device, network, and product version may affect what a person sees, but the cited official guidance does not provide a predictable outcome based on those factors. There is no supported number of seconds after which an unlike is guaranteed to prevent someone from noticing.
What should you do?
- Open the photo and tap or click its active Like control again to remove your Like.
- Do not take an extra step solely to hide the Like. The available sources do not establish that another action would retract a notification that has already appeared.
- Accept that you cannot know from Facebook’s public guidance whether the owner saw an alert.
Does the photo’s audience matter?
The photo’s context and audience affect who can see it and interact with it. Meta says public profile information can include profile photos, and that the configured setting determines who can like or comment on that information. That guidance concerns public profile information; it should not be generalized to every Facebook photo or post. See Meta’s guidance on likes and comments for public profile information.
