Windows 10 PCs do not stop working when support ends. Windows 10 version 22H2 and the listed mainstream editions reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The computer can still boot and run compatible programs, but Microsoft no longer routinely provides operating-system security fixes, feature updates, or technical assistance for those releases.
That creates a growing security and maintenance risk rather than an instant failure. Check whether the computer can upgrade to Windows 11. If it cannot, choose between replacing it and, where available and still within its enrollment window, using consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a short bridge. App support can last longer than Windows support, but an updated app does not patch the underlying operating system.
What exactly ended on October 14, 2025?
Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2 as reaching end of support on October 14, 2025, together with these editions:

The date does not automatically apply to every product carrying a Windows 10 name. Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) and Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) releases can have release-specific lifecycles. Identify the installed edition and release before assuming that the general Windows 10 date applies to a particular business, industrial, or embedded computer.
End of support is different from an activation shutdown
End of support is a servicing change, not a remote off switch. Microsoft’s consumer guidance states that Windows 10 PCs will continue to function. A supported computer can keep starting, opening locally installed software, accessing files, and connecting to the internet after the cutoff. The difference is that newly discovered operating-system weaknesses are no longer routinely corrected through the standard Windows channel.
Will a Windows 10 PC stop working?
No. Existing hardware and compatible installed applications can continue to work. Some programs may eventually stop supporting Windows 10, and unsupported system components can produce performance or reliability problems over time, but there is no general rule that the PC becomes unusable on the end-of-support date.

New vulnerabilities can be discovered after support ends, and attackers can develop techniques that target unpatched Windows components. The official guidance does not provide a universal percentage chance that a particular person will be compromised, so a precise breach forecast would be misleading. The defensible conclusion is that an unpatched operating system has less protection than a supported one, with exposure increasing as time passes.

What you lose under standard support
| Service | After standard support ends for the covered Windows 10 release |
|---|---|
| Security updates | No routine operating-system security fixes through the normal lifecycle. |
| Feature updates | No new Windows features or regular feature releases. |
| Technical assistance | Standard Microsoft support for that release ends. |
| Existing software | Compatible programs can continue running, but each publisher sets its own support policy. |
Is antivirus enough to keep Windows 10 safe?
No. Microsoft says antivirus software can help but cannot substitute for operating-system updates. Microsoft Defender or a third-party antivirus product may detect malware, block some malicious files, and reduce risk, but it cannot repair a vulnerability in an unsupported Windows component. A newly discovered attack may exploit the operating system before antivirus signatures or behavior rules can identify it.
Continue using layered protection if you remain on Windows 10 temporarily: install all updates still offered for your applications, use strong unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available, keep reliable offline or otherwise protected backups, and avoid running daily work from an administrator account. Treat these measures as risk reduction, not as a restoration of Windows support.
How to check whether your PC can move to Windows 11
Do not decide based only on the computer’s age, brand, or apparent speed. Microsoft directs users to its Windows PC Health Check tool and the current Windows 11 system-requirements page.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings > System > About and record the Windows edition, version, and device model. On Windows 10, the same information is shown under Settings > System > About; pressing Windows key + R, entering
winver, and selecting OK also displays the installed release. - Run Windows PC Health Check and review the compatibility result. It checks the device against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements rather than making an assumption from the purchase date.
- On an eligible Windows 10 device, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If Microsoft offers the Windows 11 upgrade, read the compatibility and restart information before accepting it.
- If the upgrade is not offered, confirm the edition and release, install any remaining Windows 10 updates, and investigate whether a hardware, firmware, policy, or rollout condition is blocking the offer. Do not bypass requirements on a machine that needs dependable security or support without understanding the consequences.
Microsoft characterizes the Windows 11 upgrade as free for an eligible device. Availability is device-specific, so the result shown in Windows Update and PC Health Check matters more than a general statement about a model family.

Choose among Windows 11, ESU, and replacement
These are different strategies, not interchangeable names for the same protection. Windows 11 is the supported migration path. Consumer ESU is a limited extension for eligible personal-use devices. Replacement is the route when the hardware cannot meet Windows 11 requirements or no longer fits the owner’s workload.
| Path | Who it fits | What it provides | Time and cost considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to Windows 11 | A device that passes Microsoft’s compatibility checks and can receive the offer through Windows Update. | A move to the supported Windows release, subject to Windows 11’s own lifecycle. | Microsoft says the upgrade is free for an eligible device; verify the offer on the PC. |
| Consumer ESU | Eligible personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in markets where the consumer program is offered. | Critical and important Windows 10 security updates for the ESU period; it does not add feature updates or restore normal support. | US terms listed no additional cost with PC-settings synchronization, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time US$30 payment plus applicable tax. The US page listed updates through October 13, 2026. |
| Replacement PC | An incompatible computer, or one whose performance, ports, accessibility, or support needs justify a change. | New hardware designed for a supported Windows 11 installation. | Purchase cost varies by workload and configuration; compare the full capability of the replacement with the short duration of ESU. |
How consumer ESU works
Microsoft describes consumer ESU for personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in most markets. Organization-managed devices and enterprise-licensed devices are excluded from this consumer offer. Enrollment choices on the US guidance page were:
- No additional cost when the PC’s settings are synchronized.
- Redemption of 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- A one-time US$30 payment, or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax.
The US page stated that enrolled eligible devices would receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026, regardless of when enrollment occurred. That US endpoint has passed as of October 16, 2026. Availability, enrollment windows, pricing, and end dates can differ by region; check the Microsoft page and the options displayed in the device’s Settings rather than applying US terms to another country. A UK Microsoft result, for example, showed a different endpoint.

When replacement is the sensible choice
Replacing the computer is reasonable when PC Health Check shows that it cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, when the device is already unreliable, or when its ports, battery, performance, accessibility features, or warranty no longer meet the owner’s needs. Look for a Windows 11-compatible laptop or PC suited to the actual workload rather than assuming every Windows 10 owner needs new hardware. A reader who can upgrade successfully may not need to buy anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to Microsoft 365, Office, and OneDrive?
Application support has separate terms from Windows support. Microsoft 365 Apps can continue functioning on Windows 10 after the operating system reaches end of support, but Microsoft warns that an unsupported Windows environment can contribute to performance and reliability issues.
| Product or service | Windows 10 treatment in Microsoft’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps subscription | Security updates continue on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028. Feature updates and Copilot support, where eligible, continue until Version 2608 is released; after that, the apps remain on Version 2608 and receive security updates only through October 10, 2028. |
| OneDrive desktop app | On Windows 10 version 22H2, desktop-app updates continue through October 10, 2028. Older Windows 10 versions do not receive OneDrive desktop-app updates under the cited guidance. |
| Perpetual Office editions | Do not assume the subscription-app policy applies. Microsoft’s Windows 10 overview says support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 has ended; the exact edition installed matters. |
None of these application dates extends Windows 10 operating-system security support. An updated Microsoft 365 or OneDrive client can still run on an operating system that lacks new Windows security fixes.
A practical decision process for October 2026
- Identify the installation. Record edition and version, and note whether the PC is personally owned or managed by an organization.
- Test Windows 11 eligibility. Use PC Health Check, then check Windows Update for the actual upgrade offer.
- Upgrade when eligible and suitable. Back up important files, confirm that essential peripherals and applications are compatible, and allow time for restarts and post-upgrade updates.
- Check local ESU terms only if an upgrade is unavailable or must be delayed. Confirm the region, enrollment deadline, device eligibility, and remaining update period. Do not rely on a US price or date in another market.
- Replace incompatible hardware when continued supported Windows use is required. Compare the replacement’s processor, memory, storage, ports, display, accessibility features, and warranty with the tasks the old PC performs.
- Retire or isolate the old PC. If it remains in use for a narrow legacy task, minimize internet exposure, keep backups, and avoid using it for sensitive accounts where possible.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Assuming the date applies to LTSC. Check the exact LTSC or LTSB release because its servicing timeline may differ.
- Confusing an app update with a Windows update. Microsoft 365 and OneDrive dates do not patch the Windows kernel or other operating-system components.
- Buying ESU for the wrong device. Consumer ESU is not the same as enterprise licensing and excludes organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices under the cited consumer terms.
- Using antivirus as the only control. Antivirus can reduce malware risk but cannot supply missing Windows security fixes.
- Assuming every Windows 10 PC needs replacement. Eligible computers may upgrade, and a short ESU bridge may be available in some regions.
- Applying US terms globally. The listed US$30 price, Rewards-points option, synchronization option, and October 13, 2026 endpoint are market-specific guidance, not universal Windows rules.
What Windows 10 users should do now
The first action is a compatibility check, not an antivirus purchase. If the PC qualifies, move to Windows 11 after backing up and checking application and peripheral compatibility. If it does not qualify, decide whether replacing it is practical; treat ESU, where a local Microsoft page still offers it, only as a defined short-term bridge. Keep in mind that the mainstream Windows 10 support date has already passed and that the US consumer ESU period listed by Microsoft ended October 13, 2026.
Windows 10 may remain usable for some time, and Microsoft 365 Apps or OneDrive may continue on specified versions, but continued usability is not the same as continued security support. The longer an unsupported installation remains online, the more important it is to plan a supported destination and protect data during the transition.
