When an Office version reaches end of support, Microsoft stops providing technical support, bug fixes, and security updates for that version. The installed programs may continue to open and edit files, but continued operation is not the same as being supported. Online-service connectivity can lose support on a different date, and the Windows lifecycle is separate again.
The short answer
End of support is the date on which Microsoft ends its servicing commitment for a particular Office edition. From that point, Microsoft no longer promises assistance for problems, corrections for newly discovered defects, or security fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
That date is not a universal automatic shutdown. Word, Excel, Outlook, and other installed applications may still start, and local documents may still open. Microsoft does not guarantee that they will continue to work indefinitely, however. New Windows releases, cloud-service changes, hardware, add-ins, file formats, and security controls can expose compatibility problems over time.
“After Office reaches its end of support, Microsoft no longer provides the following services:”

Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance then identifies technical support, bug fixes, and security fixes as the services that end. Treat the date as the end of a safety and maintenance net, not as a promise that the software will stop launching at midnight.
What stops on the end-of-support date
Technical support
Microsoft no longer provides normal technical support for the retired Office version. A support request may be rejected because the product is outside its lifecycle, or you may be directed to move to a supported release before further help is available.
Bug fixes
Defects discovered after the deadline are not scheduled for correction in the retired release. A problem can therefore remain permanent in that installation even if a newer Office version receives a fix.

Newly discovered vulnerabilities no longer receive security updates for that Office version. Antivirus software, firewalls, and careful user behavior do not replace vendor patches for flaws in the Office code itself. The risk is particularly important for applications that open email attachments, downloaded documents, macros, or files from shared locations.
What does not necessarily stop immediately
- The installed applications may continue to launch.
- Existing local documents may continue to open and save.
- Some online features may continue to work for a time.
- Activation, licensing, and add-in behavior can still depend on the edition, account, operating system, and configuration.
These possibilities are not guarantees. An unsupported installation can become less reliable as its surrounding environment changes.
Office support and Microsoft 365 connectivity are different deadlines
Office has a product-support lifecycle, while Microsoft 365 services have their own client-connection policy. A client can therefore lose supported cloud connectivity before the Office product itself reaches end of support.

For Office 2016 and Office 2019, Microsoft ended supported connections to Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and other Microsoft 365 services on October 10, 2023. Microsoft ended support for the Office 2016 and Office 2019 products themselves on October 14, 2025.

Older clients might still connect after the connectivity date, but Microsoft states that the connection is unsupported. Cloud-service improvements are not tested against those clients, so functionality, performance, and reliability can deteriorate without a supported fix.
| Milestone | Date | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Microsoft 365 connections for Office 2016 and 2019 ended | October 10, 2023 | Connections might continue, but Microsoft no longer supports them or tests service changes against those clients. |
| Office 2016 and Office 2019 product support ended | October 14, 2025 | Technical support, bug fixes, and security fixes ended for those Office releases. |
| Office LTSC 2021 end of support | October 13, 2026 | Microsoft’s stated support, bug-fix, and security-update commitment ends for the commercial LTSC 2021 release. |
| Office LTSC 2024 listed support endpoint | October 2029 | Microsoft identifies this as the current on-premises option for commercial customers not ready to move to cloud services. |
In practical terms, an Office 2019 user might still open a spreadsheet saved locally while encountering an unsupported Outlook connection to Microsoft 365. Do not interpret continued access as proof that the connection is secure, reliable, or eligible for Microsoft support.
Current Office lifecycle dates to check
Office 2016 and Office 2019
Both releases reached product end of support on October 14, 2025. Their supported Microsoft 365 service connection ended earlier, on October 10, 2023. If either release remains deployed, plan a replacement rather than relying on continued operation.
Office LTSC 2021
Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as the end of support for Office LTSC 2021. After that date, the commercial long-term-servicing edition no longer receives Microsoft technical support, bug fixes, or security updates.

Microsoft’s 2026 lifecycle listing also places Office 2021 applications among products retiring on October 13, 2026. “Office 2021” in that family listing should not be treated as interchangeable with the commercial “Office LTSC 2021” terminology. Confirm the exact edition installed on each device before choosing a deadline or replacement.

Microsoft 365 Apps
Microsoft 365 Apps follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy rather than one fixed Office-style retirement date. Support depends on using a supported app version, update channel, operating system, and configuration. Keeping a subscription active alone does not make an unsupported build or operating system supported.
Office LTSC 2024
Microsoft lists Office LTSC 2024 with support through October 2029. It is the cited on-premises direction for commercial organizations that are not yet ready to move their Office workloads to cloud services.
Do not confuse Office support with Windows support
Windows and Office have separate lifecycles. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not by itself determine when an Office edition retires, and an Office replacement does not make an unsupported Windows installation supported.
Microsoft has described a transition arrangement for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10. Security updates for those apps continue through October 10, 2028. Feature updates and eligible Copilot support continue through Version 2608; after that, the apps remain on Version 2608 and receive security updates only until October 10, 2028.
This exception applies to Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10. It does not restore support for Office 2016 or Office 2019, whose product support already ended, and it does not extend the lifecycle of Office LTSC 2021.
Support cases for Microsoft 365 Apps can also be limited on Windows 10. If a problem occurs only on Windows 10 and not on Windows 11, Microsoft may ask the customer to move to Windows 11. If that move is not possible, assistance may be limited to troubleshooting, with no guarantee that a workaround will be available.

What an unsupported Office installation means in daily use
- Security exposure: newly found Office vulnerabilities are not corrected in the retired release.
- Cloud-service friction: Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange Online, and related services can change around an unsupported client.
- Compatibility drift: a Windows update, browser change, identity policy, add-in update, or new file feature can expose an issue that the old Office version will not receive a fix for.
- Operational uncertainty: your organization may be unable to obtain vendor assistance when a business-critical problem appears.
- Compliance decisions remain context-specific: end of support alone does not establish that a particular organization is compliant or noncompliant. Your policies, contracts, regulators, and risk assessment determine that question.
Microsoft does not publish a universal date on which every retired installation will stop opening documents. Avoid both extremes: assuming immediate failure and assuming indefinite safe operation.

Choose a replacement path
| Path | Best fit | Questions to resolve first |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps | Organizations wanting ongoing servicing and supported Microsoft 365 cloud connectivity. | Which subscription plan, accounts, licenses, update channel, identity controls, and supported operating systems will be used? |
| Office LTSC 2024 | Commercial organizations that need a fixed, on-premises deployment and are not ready for cloud migration. | Will the long-term-servicing model support required macros, add-ins, documents, languages, deployment tools, and security policies? |
The choice is not simply “subscription versus one-time purchase.” Evaluate the environment around Office: cloud-service dependence, operating-system readiness, hardware, software distribution, network access, user geography and languages, update controls, identity, and retention requirements.

1. Identify the exact edition and build
Record whether each device has Office 2016, Office 2019, Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021, Microsoft 365 Apps, or another edition. Check the installed version and architecture, such as 32-bit or 64-bit, rather than relying on a purchase name or a user’s description. Use Microsoft Lifecycle to verify the applicable end date.
2. Confirm device and operating-system readiness
Review the target release’s minimum system requirements, Windows version, hardware capacity, available storage, language needs, and network access. A supported Office release on an unsupported operating system still leaves a lifecycle problem.
3. Audit licensing and identity
For Microsoft 365 Apps, confirm the subscription plan, user accounts, entitlements, activation method, and update channel. For an LTSC deployment, verify the organization’s commercial licensing and deployment rights. Do not assume that a license for an older perpetual edition automatically covers a newer release.

5. Plan deployment and rollback
Microsoft’s guidance refers to Configuration Manager readiness tools, Group Policy or Intune CSP settings, Office Deployment Tool packages, FastTrack migration assistance, and App Assure compatibility assistance. Select the tools that match your environment, pilot with representative users, define a rollback window, and retain a documented copy of essential files and configuration.
6. Schedule the change around service dependencies
Map Outlook profiles, Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, authentication, mobile-device policies, document-management systems, and line-of-business integrations. A desktop installation can appear successful while an add-in, sign-in flow, or cloud workflow remains incompatible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“It still opens, so it is supported.”
Launching an application proves only that it launches in the current environment. It does not restore security fixes, bug fixes, technical support, or supported cloud connectivity.
“Windows 10 updates extend Office 2019.”
They do not. The Microsoft 365 Apps transition on Windows 10 is a separate policy and does not reinstate Office 2016 or Office 2019 support.
“Every Office 2021 product has the same lifecycle.”
Confirm the edition. Microsoft’s family listing and the commercial LTSC terminology describe related but distinct lifecycle labels.
“Cloud access will stop on the deadline.”
For Office 2016 and 2019, Microsoft says older versions might still connect after the supported-connection date, but the connection is unsupported and can suffer functionality, performance, or reliability problems. Do not plan on a guaranteed immediate cutoff or guaranteed continued access.
“A new installer will preserve every workflow.”
Macros, add-ins, complex documents, identity policies, and integrations can behave differently. Pilot the actual workloads and retain a recovery plan before broad deployment.

How to act if your Office version is already out of support
- Check the exact edition, build, operating system, and connection pattern on affected devices.
- Use Microsoft Lifecycle to confirm the product’s support date and distinguish it from the Microsoft 365 connectivity date.
- Classify devices by business criticality, cloud dependence, macro and add-in use, and operating-system readiness.
- Select Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024 after validating licensing, requirements, and deployment constraints.
- Pilot the replacement with representative files and users, then address compatibility findings before full rollout.
- Set a retirement date for the unsupported installation and document exceptions with an owner, risk decision, and end date.
Bottom line
An Office end-of-support date ends Microsoft’s commitment to technical support, bug fixes, and security updates; it does not necessarily switch off the installed applications immediately. Treat Office product support, Microsoft 365 cloud connectivity, and Windows support as three separate timelines. Verify the installed edition, then test licensing, operating-system readiness, macros, add-ins, complex files, and deployment before moving to Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024.
