If an NFL defensive tackle is unavailable before kickoff, the team lists him as inactive and builds its game plan around the players eligible to play. The club may use another defensive lineman already on its game-day active list or elevate a practice-squad player under league rules. The NFL sets roster limits, but it does not require a one-for-one replacement or dictate a change in defensive scheme.
What “unavailable” means before kickoff
A player who is not eligible to play is included on the club’s inactive list, which is part of its pregame Game Day Administration Report. Club public-relations representatives deliver that report to the referee during the officiating meeting held 90 minutes before kickoff, according to the NFL’s game-day administration guidance. That timing describes the reporting context; it is not a separate public deadline for announcing inactives earlier in the day.
For a specific game, check the team’s or NFL’s current inactive announcement. A general roster rule cannot establish why a particular player is out or what a coaching staff will do with his snaps.

The regular-season and playoff Active/Inactive List contains 53 players. From that list, a club may designate up to 47 players as active for a game, or up to 48 if it has at least eight offensive linemen whose primary positions are center, guard or offensive tackle. These current figures are described by NFL Football Operations’ roster overview. A 2020 CBA summary also explains the 48-player allowance and its eight-offensive-lineman condition: NFL-NFLPA CBA summary.
#1 Best Overall
- HAND-SIGNED BY AARON DONALD – Genuine autograph hand-signed by Aaron Donald, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, directly on a blue jersey — not a printed or reproduction signature
- BECKETT BAS WITNESS CERTIFIED – Signed in the physical presence of a Beckett Authentication Services witness, the highest tier of third-party verification; includes tamper-proof sticker and matching serial numbered certificate of authenticity
- 3-TIME DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – A permanent milestone matched by only a handful of players in league history
- SUPER BOWL CHAMPION – Capped a decade-long career spent entirely with one franchise with a championship title
- COLLECTIBLE JERSEY – A genuine collectible jersey, ideal for display
The active limit is a roster constraint, not a position-by-position quota. Nothing in these rules requires a club to activate another defensive tackle specifically when one is unavailable.
Can the team elevate a practice-squad player?
Yes. A club can use the standard elevation addendum to move one or two practice-squad players to its Active/Inactive List for that game week, without waivers. That can raise the list to 54 or 55 players. The elevated player returns to the practice squad on the first business day after the game.

NFL Football Operations describes practice squads as having 16 players as of 2026, with a possible 17th when that player is in the International Pathway Program. An individual practice-squad player may be elevated for up to three regular-season games under the mechanism; a subsequent elevation requires adding him to the 53-player Active/Inactive List and completing the applicable roster steps. See the NFL roster overview for the rules and current figures.

That is a coaching decision, not an NFL roster rule. The staff may distribute the missing player’s work among defensive linemen already active, use an elevated player, or adjust personnel groupings, fronts and assignments. The official roster guidance establishes who may be on the list; it does not prescribe a particular tactical replacement.

Roster replacement and on-field role replacement are separate questions. An elevated player may be available without necessarily taking the absent tackle’s full role, while another active lineman may handle more snaps. Which approach a team actually chooses requires team- or game-specific reporting.

The pregame inactive-list and roster rules do not explain on-field medical evaluation, return-to-play decisions or injury timeouts. Those details should not be inferred from the roster framework. If the player becomes injured during the game, rely on reporting specific to that incident rather than treating the pregame rules as an account of what happens next.
