Turning off Xbox Game Pass recurring billing does not usually end access immediately: you can keep using the subscription until its expiry date. After it expires, you lose access to games you were playing through the Game Pass catalog, but your saved progress is separate. A Microsoft Community volunteer moderator says cancellation does not affect saves, though that guidance is not a formal guarantee covering every game and platform.
When does Game Pass access end after you cancel?
Cancellation and expiry are different moments. If you turn off recurring billing, Microsoft says your paid subscription remains usable through the expiry date shown on your account. You are not charged again after that date unless you renew. Microsoft Support explains how to check your subscription status and expiry date.
Xbox describes access to catalog games as lasting until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. In practice, if you have switched off recurring billing but remain within your paid period, you can continue playing eligible catalog games until the displayed expiry date, subject to each game’s continued catalog availability. Xbox’s Game Pass page describes catalog access and cancellation.
What happens to downloaded Game Pass games?
Downloading a catalog game does not make it a permanent purchase. The download is a copy of the game files; the right to launch and play a catalog title still depends on an active subscription and the game’s availability in the catalog. If your subscription expires or the title leaves the catalog, you lose Game Pass access to it.

The Xbox information cited here establishes when catalog access ends, but does not say that canceling automatically deletes installed files. So do not assume the game will be uninstalled, and do not treat a file that remains on your console or PC as proof that you still have a license to play it.
Are your saved games and progress deleted?
A Microsoft Community volunteer moderator answered a June 8, 2022 question about stored saves by saying that canceling Game Pass does not affect saves; the player can resume progress after renewing or buying the game. Read the Microsoft Community response. This is community support guidance, not a detailed formal Xbox technical policy for every game and platform.

Keep the distinction clear: losing access to launch a subscription catalog game is not the same as losing its save data. If you later renew Game Pass while the game remains eligible, or purchase the game, the moderator’s guidance is that you can continue where you left off.

What to check before your subscription expires
- Find the paid-through date: Check your Microsoft account’s subscription or billing page. If it shows “Turn on recurring billing” rather than a Manage link, Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire on the displayed date and will not automatically renew.
- Check whether the game is still in the catalog: A title leaving Game Pass can end subscription access before your subscription expiry date.
- Decide how you want to keep playing: If you want access after expiry, renew the subscription or buy the game. The save guidance above comes from a Community moderator and should not be read as a guarantee for every platform or title.
