If a lifetime hosting company shuts down, the hosting service may stop and your website can go offline. “Lifetime” does not automatically mean the company must operate forever, preserve your files indefinitely, or move your site for you. Your best protection is to keep independent copies of your site and retain control of your domain and DNS.
What may happen when the host closes?
Your site depends on the host’s servers and services to store and deliver its files. If those services end, visitors may no longer be able to reach the site. Whether you can retrieve the files afterward depends on the provider’s terms and whether you already have copies outside the hosting account.
Do not assume there will be a recovery window or that the provider will send you an archive. For example, GoDaddy’s Hosting Agreement says customers are responsible for moving website or server content before hosting services are terminated, and that content may be deleted without a copy being supplied if it was not moved first.

No single definition applies to every provider. The term is governed by the offer and agreement for the specific plan; it is not, by itself, a guarantee of perpetual service.

Examples of how providers define the term
- LTHost’s terms define “Lifetime” as the lifetime of its hosting product or service, not the natural lifetime of the customer or a promise that a particular server, data center, technology, or infrastructure component will exist forever. The terms say automatic backups are performed weekly and retained for up to 30 days, while encouraging customers to keep independent copies. These are LTHost-specific terms, not an industry-wide backup standard.
- LifetimeVPS’s terms, last updated June 3, 2026, define “Lifetime” as the shorter of the operational life of the host hardware or platform and the period the service continues to be offered commercially. The terms say the operators will endeavor to migrate active VPS instances where commercially reasonable, but do not make migration a binding guarantee.
These examples show why it is important to read the current agreement for the exact plan. Look for its definition of “lifetime,” export rights, backup access and retention, data deletion timing, migration obligations, and any refund or credit provisions.
Will your domain still work if the host closes?
Your domain name and hosting are separate services. The domain is the address people use; hosting stores and serves the website. ICANN explains that a registrar can be different from a web-hosting or email provider, and you are not required to buy hosting from your registrar. If you can still access your domain account and DNS settings, you may be able to point the domain to a replacement host. See ICANN’s registrar FAQ.

Domain renewal rules do not require a web host to preserve website files. ICANN’s Expired Registration Recovery Policy (ERRP) guidance concerns domain registration: it describes renewal notices sent to the registrant’s official contact email and requires registrars to make renewal, post-expiration renewal, and redemption or restore fees reasonably available. Keep your registrant email current and confirm renewal arrangements with your registrar.

How to protect your website before access is lost
- Export the site while the account works. Download the website files, database, and media. Do not count on receiving a download window after a shutdown or termination.
- Keep copies outside the hosting account. Store backups somewhere you can access without logging in to the host. The LTHost terms specifically advise customers to maintain independent copies of important files, databases, and media.
- Check that you can restore the backup. Keep any required credentials and instructions with the copies, and make sure you know how to restore both the files and database on another host. A backup you cannot access or restore may not help you recover the site.
- Secure your domain access. Know which company manages your registration and DNS, keep your registrant contact email up to date, and retain working account credentials.
- Review the replacement host’s terms. Check its migration process, export access, backup scope and retention, deletion policy, and support obligations before moving.
What to check in a lifetime-hosting agreement
Before buying a plan—or while you still have account access—check the written terms for these points:

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- How the provider defines “lifetime” and what happens if it closes or discontinues the plan.
- Whether you can export website files and databases at any time, and how to do so.
- Who controls backups, what they include, how long they are retained, and whether customers can download them.
- Whether you must move your content before cancellation or shutdown, and when data may be deleted.
- Whether migration is guaranteed or only something the provider may attempt.
- Whether domain registration and DNS are separate, and which account controls them.
- What fees, credits, or refunds apply if service ends.
The terms can differ substantially between providers. ICANN’s registry-termination and transition materials concern gTLD registry operations; they should not be treated as a website-hosting recovery program for individual site owners.
