If you lose access to your Steam account, installed game files and saves may remain on your computer, but they do not restore your account or transfer your licenses. Start with Steam’s account recovery process. Whether your progress survives depends on the individual game, whether Steam Cloud is enabled and synced, and whether you still have the computer that holds any local-only saves.
What you keep—and what account recovery restores
Your Steam library and game licenses are associated with your Steam account. Recovering access to that account is the path to using those licenses again. Reinstalling Steam or copying game files does not recover credentials or transfer licenses to another account.

Game files already installed on a computer, or saved separately in a backup, may still be there. They are files, not proof of account ownership. Steam’s Backup feature can preserve compatible game files, but restoring them requires signing in to the correct account. It is not a replacement for account recovery.
How to recover a Steam account
- Go to Steam’s official account recovery page and follow the recovery flow.
- Try possible account login names and email addresses you previously used. If automatic recovery cannot resolve the problem, Steam says the process will offer a form to contact Steam Support.
- Provide as much information that helps establish ownership as you can. Steam’s recovery FAQ says you can contact Support even if you have forgotten your email address, password, and phone number.
Use Steam’s official Help site rather than a link from an unsolicited message. Do not enter your credentials on suspicious sites or share them with people claiming to be Steam Support in chat.

If you think the account was stolen
Secure the email account and the computer before changing the Steam password. Otherwise, an attacker who still controls either may regain access. Follow Steam’s stolen or hijacked account guidance and its account security recommendations.
- Review authorized devices and use “Sign out everywhere” if you find an unfamiliar device.
- Change the Steam password after securing the associated email account.
- Review the security of the email account and any associated accounts, and scan the computer for malware.
- Use Steam’s official support channels; do not respond to impostors asking for credentials or account details in chat.
Will you lose your Steam saves if you cannot log in?
Not necessarily, but Steam Cloud does not protect every game save automatically. Cloud support is game-specific: developers decide whether and how a game uses it, and the game’s Steam Store page indicates whether it supports Steam Cloud. Check the game’s documentation or ask its developer or community what data it syncs; support for Cloud does not by itself establish that every save or custom file is covered.

If you still have the original computer, it may contain a newer save that never synced. Connect it and allow Steam to sync before changing machines or choosing between conflicting copies. If the old computer is gone and the save was local-only rather than in Steam Cloud, Steam says it cannot be recovered.
Where Steam keeps local Cloud copies
Steam keeps local copies of Cloud files in the userdata directory by default. On a computer you can still access, those files may help you locate a copy, but they cannot restore data that was never saved or synchronized.

Files are organized by Steam account ID and game app ID. These folders are not a guarantee that the latest save is present.
What to do about a Cloud conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud versions differ. Compare the timestamps shown in Steam’s conflict window and select the copy that matches your latest intended progress; do not choose blindly. Playing offline can delay synchronization and contribute to a conflict.

What Steam backups cover—and what they do not
Steam’s Backup feature backs up and restores compatible game files. Games that use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with the feature, and Steam recommends testing backups after creating them.

A game backup is not necessarily a save backup. For Valve-created games, Steam says its backup excludes saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files. Custom material must be copied separately. Save locations for third-party games vary, so check the game’s documentation, community, or developer instructions. See Steam’s Backup feature instructions.
You can keep separate copies of compatible game files and local saves on an external drive, but only if you actually copy the save data. A drive cannot recover account access or licenses, retrieve Cloud data that was never downloaded, or restore a save that was never backed up.
Protect access and progress before there is a problem
Steam Guard adds a second authentication layer for sign-ins from unrecognized devices. If you use the mobile authenticator, Steam lets you attach a confirmed phone number and provides a recovery code. Store that code safely so it is available if you lose your phone or authenticator. Steam’s instructions are in its mobile authenticator setup FAQ; its Steam Guard FAQ explains the added security layer.
