Your save usually stays on your PS4 or PS5 after a PlayStation Plus Extra game leaves the Game Catalog—but you can no longer play that game through the catalog. If you later buy the game, PlayStation says you can access the save again as long as you have not deleted it. To protect progress or move it to another console, back it up to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before your access changes.
What changes when a game leaves the catalog?
The game’s subscription entitlement ends: you can no longer launch it through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. That does not mean its downloaded save is automatically erased. PlayStation says saves for downloaded games are stored on the PS4 or PS5 console.

PlayStation’s May 2022 FAQ says that if the title is still available on PlayStation Store and you buy it, you can access the save again, provided you did not delete the saved data. Treat the game and the save as separate: losing catalog access does not itself delete your local progress. Check the title’s current Store listing and catalog end date, since availability can change.
Downloaded and streamed saves are stored differently
| Play style | Where the save is stored | What to do to move it |
|---|---|---|
| Downloaded game | On the PS5 or PS4 console | Upload the save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download it on the destination console. |
| Streamed game | By PlayStation | Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage to transfer the save to or from a downloaded version. |
PlayStation warns that saved data is not automatically transferred between streamed and downloaded games. Cloud transfer is manual; do not assume that changing play mode or console will synchronize progress for you. Streaming is a PlayStation Plus Premium feature, so this distinction applies if you have been streaming a catalog title rather than downloading it.

Back up a save before access changes or you switch consoles
PlayStation’s current US support page lists cloud storage as a PlayStation Plus benefit, with 100 GB for PS5 and PS4 saves and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Menu labels can vary with system software, but the documented paths are:
On PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose the saved-data category for the console and game you are managing, then use the cloud-storage controls to upload the save.
- On the destination PS5, return to the saved-data settings and download the save from cloud storage.
For PS4 saves managed on a PS5, PlayStation specifies Saved Data (PS4) and the Upload to Cloud Storage tab.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
On PS4
- Highlight the game in Library.
- Press OPTIONS and choose Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the save and upload it. On the destination console, use the corresponding download option to retrieve it.
If you are moving between a streamed and downloaded copy, upload from the save’s source location and download or copy it into the destination save location. Do not delete the local save if you may buy the game later; PlayStation’s published guidance conditions access to that save on it not having been deleted.

Can you use a USB drive instead?
A USB backup is a limited option for PS4 saved data, not a way to keep playing a departed catalog game. PlayStation’s PS5 storage guide lists USB storage for PS4 saves, but not PS5 saves. The drive must be formatted as FAT or exFAT, and PlayStation cautions that not every device is compatible. For a PS5 save, use the supported cloud-storage route rather than relying on USB.

DLC and access to the game are separate from save retention
PlayStation says DLC and add-ons tied to a game also become inaccessible when that game leaves the service. Access may return if you resubscribe or buy the game. Keeping a save does not restore the game or its add-ons by itself; the relevant entitlement must be available again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Membership validation is not a save-deletion timer
PlayStation’s 2022 FAQ says a PSN connection is required at least once every seven days to validate membership and maintain access to downloaded Extra and Premium/Deluxe catalog games. That interval concerns validating access, not deleting saves.
