When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, your subscription stops providing access to it. Your progress is expected to remain in cloud storage, but that save guidance comes from Microsoft Community answers rather than a universal guarantee. To keep playing, you need another entitlement, such as buying the game.
What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass access and game saves are separate. A departure from the catalog ends the subscription-based entitlement; it does not by itself mean your progress is deleted. Xbox’s Game Pass catalog identifies titles marked “Leaving soon” and says members can buy a game to keep playing. Catalog availability and offers can change.
The available Microsoft Community answers indicate that cloud saves remain and can be used again after you renew access or buy the game. They are forum guidance, not a formal promise covering every game or indefinite save retention. The official Xbox Game Pass FAQ could not be read as article text, so it does not substantiate a more specific save-retention policy here.
How to keep playing
Buy the game
Buying the title is the direct option if you want to continue while it is outside the catalog. Check the listing for the exact game and platform version you use, and confirm the current price and purchase terms before paying.

Xbox advertises a Game Pass member discount of up to 20% on its catalog, but that is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount on every departing title. Check whether the particular game has a current eligible offer. An Xbox Wire article from 2020 also recommended using the member discount for games due to leave; it does not establish today’s offer terms.
Wait for access to return
If you do not buy the game, you can wait until it returns to the catalog or otherwise regain access. The Community answers indicate that cloud progress may then be available, but the sources do not establish a universal retention period for every title.

What to check before relying on a save
- Platform and edition: Confirm that the version you regain access to is compatible with the one where you made the save. Xbox/PC versions, editions, publisher accounts, and save systems can differ; no universal transfer rule is established.
- Save system: The practical guidance concerns cloud saves. The sources do not establish that every game uses cloud saves or that every save type transfers between platforms.
- Current catalog status: Xbox has a “Leaving soon” category, but the catalog evidence does not establish a standard notice period. Check the listing for the current status rather than assuming a fixed amount of warning.
How to decide whether to buy
Compare the current price and any displayed member discount with how soon you expect to play again. If you do buy, make sure the store listing matches your platform and version; a purchase of a different edition or platform should not be assumed to restore the same save.
