Your phone plan does not automatically change the moment your mobile carrier is acquired. Your price, features, account and billing may continue as they are for a time, or the new owner may later integrate systems and offer or require a plan change. The deal, your service agreement and the carrier’s written notices determine what happens to your account.

What happens to my phone plan if my carrier is bought?

There is no single outcome for every acquisition. A service may keep operating under its existing provider and account arrangements while the companies work through integration. Later, the carrier may change account systems, billing, network arrangements or plan options. An acquisition announcement alone does not establish when or whether any of those changes will affect you.

Use the carrier’s notice and your current agreement to establish what applies to your line. Check the effective date and whether the notice says your plan, price, discounts, device payments, biller or payment process will change.

Will my phone bill go up or will I have to switch plans?

Neither is automatic. Do not assume your existing price and features are guaranteed indefinitely, but do not assume an acquisition means an immediate increase or forced migration either. The carrier’s written terms should say whether it is changing your plan, and when.

For example, Verizon’s current FAQ for its acquisition of Frontier says Frontier service and pricing will continue as normal for now. It says customers can continue managing their account and billing through Frontier and do not need to take immediate action. This is Verizon’s guidance for Frontier service, principally home internet; it is not a promise about mobile plans generally.

What do FCC rules say about carrier acquisitions?

FCC rules cited here address a specific situation: certain covered sales or transfers involving a subscriber’s preferred carrier. They should not be read as a blanket guarantee that every mobile plan stays unchanged after a merger, or that every customer can cancel without charge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In FCC 01-156, the Commission said affected subscribers should receive reasonable notice of their right to choose a new carrier if they do not want service from the acquiring carrier. The order also says the acquiring carrier must take responsibility for carrier-change charges associated with the covered transaction and make that clear in advance notice. For subscribers with term contracts, the notice may warn that leaving before the term ends could trigger termination penalties. Read FCC 01-156, paragraphs 25–26.

A later FCC order discusses 30-day advance notice in the preferred-carrier sale or transfer context addressed there. That is not evidence of a universal 30-day notice rule for every mobile-plan change after an acquisition. Read FCC 04-153. The related regulation is 47 CFR § 64.1120.

Can I keep my number if my carrier is acquired?

If you decide to switch, FCC consumer guidance says you can generally keep your number when changing providers within the same geographic area. Ask the new carrier to handle the transfer and confirm the port before cancelling your old service. Number portability does not by itself establish that your device is compatible or unlocked.

What to do when you receive an acquisition notice

  1. Save the notice. Note its effective date, any deadline to act and the contact information it gives for questions.
  2. Check your agreement and latest bill. Compare the stated plan price and features with your current charges, discounts, device installments and any remaining term.
  3. Ask for specifics in writing. Ask whether your number, plan, price, discounts and device installments will remain the same, and when account or billing systems will change.
  4. Evaluate any alternative before accepting it. Compare its total price, features and coverage with your current service; confirm device compatibility and unlocking with the prospective carrier.
  5. Keep records of unresolved problems. Save bills and correspondence. The FCC Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center accepts phone-related complaints about billing, coverage, porting and unlocking.
